$28,854 La Trobe University 2022 Industry Research Medibank International Scholarships in Australia for PhD
This unique award will be offered to an outstanding applicant who is interested in enhancing clinical treatment and outcomes for patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. It was created by La Trobe University in conjunction with Medibank.
Adolescents and young adults have generally been told that ACL repair surgery is essential to have a decent prognosis following an ACL damage. ACL repairs in Australia have grown by 74 percent since 2000 (the highest rate in the world), resulting in direct hospital charges of approximately $142 million per year. This is in contradiction to current clinical trial evidence, which demonstrates that for most ACL damaged individuals, reconstruction offers no extra advantage over active rehabilitation (e.g., exercise treatment) (e.g., exercise therapy). In Australia, an estimated $80 million is spent each year on ACL reconstructions that may be unwarranted.
