However, the Department of Health has instituted a scholarship for medical students in the Philippines. A scholarship that gives them the time to conduct more research and improvise in their field than worry about tuition. .

What you need to know about the DOH Medical Student Scholarship

The Philippine Department of Health (DOH for short) online tool is the executive department of the Philippine government responsible for ensuring access for all Filipinos to basic public health services by providing quality health care and regulating all health services and products.

In order to improve the quality of medical staff injected into the system, this association thought it prudent to start this DOH medical scholarship scheme.

The DOH Medicine Scholarship Program includes all four years of medical education, including summer immersion programs before the second and third years of medicine, and one year of postgraduate internship.

It also covers the four years of a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery. In exchange, scholars are expected to work for two years in public health for every year of schooling completed by DOH.

Priority will be given to prospective students from low-income families, from geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas or from the twenty poorest municipalities and cities in the country, and from indigenous communities or national minorities; dependent on government employees and active military and police personnel; calamity victims; and Barangay health workers and traditional birth attendants.

The DOH Medical Scholarship Programs The objective is to decrease the inequality in the distribution of human resources in health in the Philippines by guaranteeing the presence of service-oriented human resources for health in identified priority areas, generally rural areas that are geographically isolated.

The program covers students from the following state universities:

  • University of the Philippines- Ermita, Manila
  • Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila- Intramuros, Manila
  • Cagayan State University – Carig Sur, Tuguegarao City
  • West Visayas State University- Lapaz, Iloilo City
  • University of the Philippines College of Health Sciences – Palo, Leyte
  • Mindanao State University – Bonifacio Ave., Iligan City

Online  DOH Medical Scholarships are available to pursue the undergraduate program in the field of medicine and midwifery at any of the scholarship partner institutions.

Eligible Nationality

The Medical Scholarship in the Philippines is available to all Filipino students, of good moral character, who have passed the admission requirements of the DOH and their chosen partner school.

Host Nationality

The DOH scholarship is sponsored by the Republic of the Philippines.

Eligibility requirements to be a recipient of the DOH scholarships for medical students

  • Must be a natural Filipino citizen
  • Must be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree conferred by a duly recognized educational institution (for the postgraduate program)
  • Should have completed all academic preparations
  • An overall weighted average of 2.50 or its equivalent or better (according to medical school)
  • Possess an NMAT of 45 and above (depending on the medical school)
  • You must not fail any subject in the undergraduate course (depending on the medical school)
  • There must be no record of having been withdrawn from any medical school.
  • Possession has no record of having been denied admission
  • Hold has no record of being convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude
  • Must pass the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
  • Must have passed an interview panel.

What do I receive as a recipient of the DOH scholarships for medical students?

Tuition, lab, miscellaneous, and other school fees are to be paid directly to partner schools.

The subsidy paid directly to academics, composed of:

  • Living allowance: PhP 4,500 per month
  • Accommodation allowance: PhP 3,000 per month
  • Transportation allowance: PhP 800 per month
  • Book allowance: PhP 12,100 per semester
  • Flat Allowance: PhP 3,025 per semester
  • Miscellaneous Allowance- PhP 5,500 per semester

Annual Health Insurance: $2,400 per year, to be paid directly to Philippine Health Insurance Corp.

How to Apply for the DOH Scholarships for Medical Students

The application process for the DOH scholarships has two evaluation phases after which all applications will go to the Davao Center for Health Development.
The two stages include;

Initial Screening: Students must apply directly to any of the eight DOH partner schools and must meet the minimum criteria/requirements. Only those who have been admitted to the partner schools are eligible to apply for the DOH scholarship.
Final Screening: Validation and final evaluation of applicants by the DOH based on established criteria. Successful academic applicants will be notified through the Partner Schools Scholarship Department.
