About the Scholarship Sponsor:
Guildford, England is home to the illustrious University of Surrey. The Battersea Polytechnic Institute was formed in 1891, and the public research university we know today was established in 1966 with the help of a royal charter. In 1920, the institute’s focus shifted to science and technology; in 1956, it received the designation of “College of Advanced Technology.” The school changed its name to Battersea College of Technology the following year. In 1962, it was decided to move the university to Guildford. In 1963, the Robbins Report suggested that Battersea College grow into a full-fledged university.
As part of its 125th anniversary celebrations, the institution was recognized as 2016’s University of the Year by The Sunday Times Good University Guide. Both the Stag Hill and Manor Park locations serve as campuses for the university. Its flagship Stag Hill school ran out of room, so they opened a new campus in Manor Park. In addition to the School of Veterinary Medicine, student accommodation, and the Surrey Sports Park can all be found on the Manor Park site. As an added bonus, the university’s Surrey Research Park (which opened in 1985) is home to more than 100 businesses that directly or indirectly employ almost 2500 people. There are three faculties at the University of Surrey, each of which contains 22 schools and departments. The three departments are the Health and Medical Sciences Department, the Engineering Department, and the Arts and Social Sciences Department. Further, the institution has set up two relevant departments to aid the faculties (department of higher education and department of technology-enhanced learning). With the help of Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, the University of Surrey opened the Surrey International Institute-DUFE (SII-DUFE) in China in 2006.
The institution caters to a diverse student body by providing both undergraduate and graduate level instruction across several disciplines. More than that, it offers research classes in fields as diverse as chemistry, creative writing, clinical psychology, computer science, economics, English literature, law, politics, and physics. Foreign students at the institution can apply for scholarships and bursaries. Short courses and continuing education programs are also available at several universities. University of Surrey alumni have gone on to successful careers in academia, government, and the private sector in areas like research, teaching, operational and professional services, and technical and experimental study.
As a result of the university’s high quality education, its graduates go on to become leaders in many other industries. Behrouz Afagh, Ann Keen (Labor), Kay Swinburne (Conservative), Hassan Diab (Lebanese Education Minister), Rilwan Lanre Babalola (Nigerian Cabinet Minister), Tony Attwood (psychologist), Susan Blackmore (parapsychologist), Nigel Williams (radio presenter), Sarah Tan (broadcaster), and Behrouz Afagh are just some of the well-known faces in the media (BBC executive). The county of Surrey is not only home to stunning landscapes, but also to the prestigious University of Surrey. Originally established in 1891 as Battersea Polytechnic Institute, today’s University of Surrey is a public research institution. The Polytechnic’s prestige had increased to the point where it was recognized as a college of advanced technology by the year 1956. Battersea College of Technology was the institution’s new moniker after several name changes leading up to 1957. The Robbins Report, which recommended the College be upgraded to university status, did just that in 1963. Several collaborative programs exist amongst departments at Surrey University.
The Surrey International Institute -DUFE is a partnership between the university and Dalian’s Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (SII-DUFE). With their help, both the Business Management and Tourism Management departments can offer excellent degrees to their students. The Guildford School of Acting (GSA), which provides training for performers, is a partner of this organization as well. In addition to a long and illustrious history and fruitful partnerships with other institutions of higher learning, it also provides instruction in a wide variety of fields, including but not limited to business, management, health sciences, psychology, veterinary medicine, and science. Therefore, pupils can focus on areas in which they show the most promise.
