About the Scholarship:
Linköping became Sweden’s sixth university in 1975. Linköping University (LiU) has grown significantly since then, with campuses in Norrköping and Stockholm.
Since medieval times, when Linköping Cathedral offered a school with significant international ties and its own student hall in Paris, Linköping has been a prominent center of learning. The Cathedral School opened in 1627 as Sweden’s third upper secondary school, and a college for primary school teachers opened in 1843. The Fröbel Institute, Sweden’s first college for training pre-school teachers, was established in Norrköping in 1902.
Linköping University (LiU) undertakes world-leading, boundary-crossing research in subjects such as materials science, information technology, and hearing in close partnership with the corporate world and society. In the same vein, the university provides a variety of unique educational programs, many of which have a distinct professional focus and lead to certification as doctors, teachers, economists, and engineers, among other professions.
On four campuses, the institution has 32,000 students and 4,000 employees. We are working together to find answers to the challenging challenges that we face today. Our students are among the most sought-after on the job market, and LiU is consistently ranked as a top global university in international rankings.
In both education and research, Linköping University has always prioritized innovation. In 1980, the Department of Thematic Studies, which had just been established, took a novel approach in Sweden. Interdisciplinary themes such as Technology and Social Change and Water and Environmental Studies were used to arrange the research. To overcome challenging challenges, scientists collaborated across disciplines. LiU was also the first university in Sweden to establish graduate research programs for several topics. Later, the approach extended throughout the university and became a national success.
In 1986, the newly founded Faculty of Health Sciences (Hälsouniversitetet) brought together government and regionally financed education.
It was the first in Sweden to adopt problem-based learning, or PBL, and was the first in the country to do so. Later, LiU became the world’s first institution to allow students from various health sciences degrees to treat real patients on a student-run training hospital.
The establishment of Campus Norrköping in 1997 was a watershed moment in the University’s history. Some programs were previously run out of Norrköping, but the number of students has exploded as a result of the government’s efforts to expand higher education. The former industrial district’s historic factories were brought back to life with classrooms, labs, cafés, a library, and, of course, students.
When the prestigious Carl Malmsten School of Furniture sought a working partner from the academic sector, Linköping University extended to Stockholm as well. In the year 2000, the Malmsten furniture design and handicraft programs were integrated into LiU. Malmstens relocated to new premises on the island of Lidingö in the autumn of 2009, after nearly 60 years in Södermalm in central Stockholm. LiU now has a fourth location.

The research at Linköping University is internationally renowned, with specific leadership capabilities in materials science, information technology, and disability studies. LiU was the first institution in Sweden to integrate interdisciplinary research and problem-based learning (PBL).
The university is proud of its work in medical, teacher education, business, and economics, and it provides international students with a fantastic opportunity to study in a fascinating interdisciplinary setting.
