The Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who was the leader of Tanganyika during its independence struggle in 1961 and went on to serve as Tanzania’s first prime minister and eventually as its president. In 1949, Nyerere was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to study for a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh. While there, he took classes in subjects such as English, Political Economy, Social Anthropology, British History, Economic History, Constitutional Law, and Moral Philosophy. He graduated with his master’s degree in 1951.

Scholarship Offer:

  • The scholarship will provide an annual stipend of £13,500 in addition to covering the costs of tuition.

 

The Gustafsson & Skrondal Visiting Scholarship is administered by the University of Oslo’s Centre for Educational Measurement (CEMO). As part of the visiting scholar program, CEMO and the University of Oslo host a number of young researchers from Norway and elsewhere each year.

 

Eligibility for Scholarship.

  • The prize will be given to a student who has their primary residence in Tanzania and has been admitted into the Master of Science in Africa and International Development program on a full-time basis
  • The Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship will be given out to students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement. Candidates must either already possess or anticipate obtaining a degree that is comparable to a UK first class or 2.1 Honours degree at the undergraduate level in a topic that falls under the Humanities or Social Science umbrella.
  • Candidates are required to submit a personal statement as part of the scholarship application. This statement should make it abundantly obvious why the applicant is interested in receiving the scholarship, as well as their prior experience and future goals in the field of international and African development.
  • Candidates are required to take responsibility for coordinating the submission of two supporting reference letters on their behalf.
  • Note that it is not possible to receive both the Nyerere Scholarship and any other scholarship monies at the same time.

If a student enrolls in one of the degree programs offered by SOAS University of London, they may be eligible to receive a fee waiver award in the amount of £5,000. This award is available to students who are interested in receiving a degree from SOAS University of London.
