Scholarship details
Both the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) programs are designed to recognize and reward outstanding graduate students attending universities in Ontario that receive public funding for their operations. Both programs receive their funding from a combination of sources, including the government of Ontario and the participating institutions. The value of the prizes is determined by the government, which contributes two-thirds of that value, and the university, which supplies the remaining one-third.
At the University of Waterloo, candidates just need to submit one application to be considered for both OGS and QEII-GSST. Both scholarships are equally prestigious in their own right. Students who are applying for tri-agency awards WILL NOT automatically be considered for OGS and QEII-GSST; instead, these students will be required to submit a separate application form for OGS and QEII-GSST.
The following is a list of the distinctions between the QEII-GSST scholarship and the OGS award:
- The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is a merit-based scholarship program open to students from all over the world who are currently enrolled as graduate students in Ontario. Eligible applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
- Students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who are enrolled in a research-based graduate program in one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines are eligible to apply for the QEII-GSST scholarship, which is awarded on the basis of merit and is the only program of its kind.
