As part of Innovate UK’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, a collaboration led by University of Sussex spin-out Universal Quantum was awarded a £7.5 million grant to develop a quantum computer that can rectify its own faults and apply the technology to high-impact problems in the aerospace industry. You can learn more about this project by visiting this page. For this objective, a team at Sussex will adapt an existing quantum computer prototype and carry out significant proof-of-concept demonstrations in partnership with a variety of commercial partners to prove important operating principles. The student will assist in the creation of the UK’s first error-correcting quantum computer as part of this studentship. In addition to demonstrating ion transport and quantum gates, as well as making changes to the control systems of a quantum computer, this includes the automation of an ion trap apparatus.

For trapped-ion quantum computing and simulation, Ion Quantum Technology Group is one of the leading centers in the world. The UK Hub on Quantum Computing and Simulation includes the members of this group. Six postdoctoral fellows, 14 PhD students, the senior scientist, and the head of the group are all part of the current group.
