Livestock contributes to the agricultural activities of 800 million poor small producers. Rural households can improve their livelihoods by raising a wide variety of animals: cows, buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, camels, llamas, alpacas, horses, donkeys, rabbits, and even bees.

The demand for livestock products is estimated to more than double in the next 20 years, as a result of urbanization, economic growth and a change in consumption patterns in developing countries. Livestock is one of the fastest growing agricultural subsectors in developing countries, accounting for about 30% of agricultural gross domestic product (GDP).

However, 85% of livestock farmers around the world still live in poverty. Small producers will need to become more productive, efficient and ecologically sustainable to meet the demands of growing market demand, which is mostly coming from urban areas. These requirements relate to food quality, food safety and regularity of supply.

A decisive factor for rural families

Owning small or large livestock can make a big difference in women’s and men’s incomes, in addition to strengthening household food and nutrition security and increasing resilience.

Livestock provides a wide variety of protein- and nutrient-rich food products, such as eggs, meat, milk, and honey, which can be processed into a range of products. This quality contributes to the diversification of diets and the generation of income.

Cattle are a source of leather, fur, and fibers such as wool, mohair, and cashmere. The manure is used as fertilizer for crops and as fuel for cooking and can be composted or used to produce methane in biogas digesters. Lastly, ranching provides animal traction for crop production and the transportation of people and goods to markets.

Poor rural families without access to financial services often use livestock as a method of asset management. These families invest in animals when they have some money left over and sell them when they need cash or other needs. This strengthens the resilience of these families in the face of economic and climatic shocks, allowing them to plan for the future.
