It is possible to pursue postgraduate studies in either the so-called 2nd cycle, which is often comprised of four semesters leading up to a Master’s degree, or the 3rd cycle, which is typically comprised of two semesters (concert examination, masterclass or PhD in an artistic subject). This initiative does not provide funding for any work outside of the artistic realm. Applicants from the fields of musicology or music education, as well as musicians working on scientific projects, are eligible for participation in additional scholarship programs offered by the DAAD.

- The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides the following services to scholarship recipients to make it possible for them to learn German in advance of their stay in the country:
- Payment of course fees for the online language course “Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)” (www.deutsch-uni.com) for a period of six months after the recipient has received the Scholarship Award Letter, if necessary: Language course completed either two, four, or six months prior to the beginning of the study visit; the DAAD will determine whether or not to fund participation and for how long based on the applicant’s level of German language ability as well as the project. If German is used either as the language of instruction or as the working language at the German host institution, then participation in a language course is required.
- During the course of the scholarship, a stipend to cover the cost of a German class of the recipient’s choosing
- Reimbursement of the costs associated with sitting for the TestDaF exam, provided that the exam was either completed in the home country after the Scholarship Award Letter was received or in Germany prior to the conclusion of the funding period.
- The fee for a DSH examination that is taken during the scholarship period may be reimbursed as an alternative to the TestDaF for scholarship recipients who have previously completed a language course.
Eligibility for Scholarship.
- Applicants from other countries who have earned their first degree from a university in the field of music no later than the time they begin their scholarship-supported study program; if this is not possible, they should at least have completed all of the training options that are available for their instrument in their home country.
- As a general rule, applicants should not have taken their final examinations more than six years before to the deadline for application submission.
- It is up to each individual college of music to determine the upper age limit for students seeking admission. These age limits may vary from college to college, based on the academic level of the applicant and the area of study that they wish to pursue.
- Applicants who had already been living in Germany for more than 15 months prior to the application deadline would be disqualified from further consideration.
- If the recipient of the scholarship is enrolled in a master’s or postgraduate degree program that requires an overseas study component as part of the curriculum, then financial support for the overseas study component will typically only be available under the following conditions:
- The study trip is necessary in order to accomplish the goal that has been set for the scholarship.
- The amount of time spent studying cannot exceed one-fourth of the total time allotted for the scholarship. It is not possible to fund even a portion of longer periods of time.
- During the study period, the student will not be residing in their nation of origin.
- Language: Applicants in the field of music should have a knowledge of the language of instruction that corresponds to the standards of the chosen university no later than the time they begin their scholarship at the very latest. If you do not currently possess the language abilities required by the institution at the time of your application, your application should show the extent to which you are in a position to attain the required level of proficiency within a reasonable amount of time. - Criteria for Selection: The awarding of scholarships in the field of music is left up to a special committee within the DAAD that is comprised of academics teaching at German institutions of music. Master’s degree programme:
- Between ten and twenty-four months, depending on the duration of the study program or research project that has been selected.
- The scholarships are granted for the duration of the study period that is customary for the particular study program that has been selected (up to a maximum of 24 months). Proof of academic achievements should indicate that the study program can be successfully completed within the standard period of study in order to receive additional funding after the first year of study for 2-year courses. This is required in order to receive further funding after the first year of study. As a result, you will be need to provide a reference from the primary subject instructor.
- Applicants who are currently enrolled in the first year of a postgraduate program in Germany at the time they submit their application may be eligible for financial support for the following academic year.
- If the student plans to proceed to a higher level of study (often from a Master’s degree to an advanced course of study such as a concert exam or master class), they may be eligible for a scholarship extension. It is possible to submit a request for an extension for a concert exam for a period of up to two years if you are an exceptionally qualified candidate.
- Studies that are supplementary but do not lead to the final qualification:
- One full year of schooling. On request, the scholarship period may be extended in exceptional circumstances.
- Start: typically on the first of October, but could be sooner if a language course is taken before beginning the study program.
