The University of Witwatersrand has a beautiful history where since the 1920’s they have been educating young minds to encourage those to reach the highest heights of a prospective career.

The university has an enrollment of a progressive 40,000 students which was officially calculated in 2018. This enrollment amount has already grown. A near approximate of 20% of students live on campus within one of the institution’s 17 residences. There is talk of adding more resident dorms.

However, around 60% of the university’s total enrollment is for undergraduate study, with around 30%  percent being postgraduate and the remaining student peer population belonging to Occasional Students (part-time enrollment students).

The University of Witwatersrand has produced over 400 researchers that have gained national recognition since the college’s inception.

The academics aspect of the university covers, engineering and the built environment, commerce, law, and management, health sciences, humanities, and science. Each of these main academics actually has their own facilities and buildings.

For instance the science faculty building caters to: Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences; Chemistry; Physics; Molecular and Cell Biology; Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies; Geosciences; Mathematics; Statistics and Actuarial Science and School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics.

Where the Civil Engineering faculty building caters to: Architecture & Planning, Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Construction Economics & Management, Electrical & Information Engineering, Mechanical, Industrial & Aeronautical Engineering and Mining Engineering.

The University is known for a huge number of available libraries on their campus which can be accessed by students, the libraries available are:

  • Witwatersrand Health Sciences Library

Fantastically during a 2019 ranking grade there was a determination that the University of Witwatersrand came in as the second amongst all global universities that holds the Academic Ranking of World Universities. This was a huge and significant achievement which allowed the university to really catapult into the international eye. It was also 2019 with this ranking that helped other international students find this incredible academic institution and consider it as an option for themselves or for family and friends to look at.

 

Eligibility

  • The eligible students must be from the South Africa region only. Students from other parts of the world will not be given this scholarship opportunity.
  • Both female and male students are able to apply for this scholarship.
  • At the current time there is no real age-restriction for this scholarship, only that the potential recipient does not hold any other scholarships already.
  • A student that holds a gap year, well only one student that is selected each year that has taken a gap year will be admitted. The rest of the eligible students will need to be full-time students that have not taken a  gap year or deferred.

 

Requirements

It does need to be noted for all potential applicants that those who are writing the Cambridge A & AS-Level or International Baccalaureate Qualification will need to receive a scholarship for the number of A and B symbols achieved on a sliding scale ranging from R5000 up to a maximum of R30000. The maximum equals to the total USD amount listed in the title.

 

How to Apply

The only way to apply is to follow the guidelines instructed through the university website link provided. If students do not follow the necessary and important instructions they risk sending in an incomplete application.

Students that are applying for this scholarship will stand a better chance at winning if they have decided to apply for admission to the University.

If a student notices that they do no fit a certain eligible trait, that may mean the student is not suitable for this scholarship.

 

Reward – Extra Benefits

Students will be able to win a certain level of funding but only if those academic grades fall into a few of these categories:

  • APS of 51 or above (excluding Life Orientation) receive around or above R42000
  • APS between 48 and 50 (excluding Life Orientation) receive around or above R30000
  • APS between 45 and 47 (excluding Life Orientation) receive around or above R15000
  • APS between 43 and 44 (excluding Life Orientation) receive around or above R10000

There is a subject change that involves increasing funds depending on the student’s life and income situation.

 

Deadline

The deadline is marked as September 30, 2022. This is the only date mentioned where students need to have their exam scores and academic transcripts turned in by. And also instead of sending in their transcripts through an online website portal, students must send their official document copies to the Student Enrollment Center.

There have been delayed deadline dates in the past so it is best to be reassured to check back with the University website frequently for any changes.

 

Open Submission Window Time Frame

The time is now to send in any exams and academic transcript copies that are needed for qualification for this scholarship. The open submission window time frame is open now until September 30, 2022. This is a great and significant amount of time to utilize to ensure all of the proper paperwork is in order when submitting.

If a student sends in an incomplete application or has incomplete scores on their transcripts the student will be deemed not qualified and referred to either the short list (where students will need to be interviewed before commencing further) or told that they do not fit the criteria for this scholarship.

All potential students should check to see if their academic scores fit with the reward score field presented in the ‘reward’ section.

 

Annual

This is an annual scholarship that occurs each year around the same time. However, all students should understand that each scholarship is subject to any date change. The website link provided should be checked frequently to see if any important dates have been changed or delayed.
