Scholarship Overview
The Southern Cross University in partnership with Agilent Technology offers the Ph.D. Scholarship in Archaeo-geochemistry: ISOTOPES AND TRACE ELEMENT IN HUMAN REMAINS, the scholarship is a fully-funded position that will research in the field of Archeo-Geochemistry, in particular, improve the understanding of hominid exposure using LA-ICPMS/LA-MC-ICPMS on fossil remains. The Doctorate contains a stable methodological and paleoanthropological component. Several projects are available and shortlisted candidates are offered specific projects based on their skills and interests. The university welcomes candidates with a particular interest in human evolution to develop their own Ph.D. thesis.

Geoarchaeology and Archaeometry Research Group
Southern Cross University’s (GARG) Geoarchaeology and Archaeometry Research Group focus on past human interactions and its population and environments. Their goal is to use and improve analytical methods and techniques from mathematics, chemistry, physics, geoscience, and life sciences to answer various questions in geoarchaeology, such as Sources of stone tools, time of human evolution, paleoecological reconstructions, paleodiet, formation processes the site and the history of occupation, as well as the characteristics of archaeological finds.

Eligibility
This scholarship position is open to all local and international applicants currently based in Australia. International applicants currently living overseas are welcome to apply, but current Australian Government restrictions at the border may affect their application. The successful candidate must meet the entry requirements to enroll in the doctoral program at the Southern Cross University full-time, including a bachelor’s degree (with honors, grade 2 or above) or a master’s degree with a research component, in geoscience, (geo)chemistry, environmental science, or any related fields.
Ideally, candidates will have experience in geochemistry and a strong knowledge or interest in working on the evolution of humans and primates in question. Applicants with experience in LA-CIPMS or Multicollector-ICPMS from various research fields such as medicinal geochemistry or related fields are also encouraged to apply. Applicants with experience with Matlab, R, or similar packages are an advantage.

Important Note on the Application
- Expression of Interest Results: You will be notified of the results of the Expression of Interest by email after the application deadline.
- Interview invitation: If you are interested in the shortlist, you will be invited for an interview. You will receive more information about the interview in the invitation. Interviews will be conducted online via Zoom.
Scholarship Award
The successful students will be receiving a Ph.D. Stipend for three years with a rate of $28,597 annually.
The beneficiary of the awards must read and agree to the terms and conditions applied to the scholarship.
