University Postgraduate Awards (UPAs)
The University Postgraduate Awards (UPAs) serve as financial stipends specifically designed to support doctoral and Master of Philosophy candidates during their postgraduate studies. The scholarship awards are exclusive to the University of Wollongong, reflecting its commitment to fostering academic excellence and supporting exceptional postgraduate students.

Scholarship Eligibility
Before proceeding with the application the students must meet the eligibility criteria of the scholarship awards.
- Enrolled in, or have an unconditional offer for, an MPhil or doctoral degree at UOW: Applicants must be currently enrolled or have received an unconditional offer for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or a doctoral degree at the University of Wollongong (UOW). This criterion ensures that only students pursuing advanced research degrees at UOW are considered for the Stipend Scholarship.
- Not receiving income from another source to support general living costs: Candidates should not be receiving any significant income from external sources to cover their general living expenses while undertaking their course of study.
- To meet DIBP visa requirements for International Students, it is important to comply with the visa requirements set by the Department of Home Affairs,
Stipend Scholarship is awarded to deserving students who are actively pursuing higher research degrees at UOW and have demonstrated a genuine need for financial support.
Application Process
The application process for a UPA (University Postgraduate Award) involves a straightforward and efficient procedure.
- The application for the eligible students can be completed in an online portal provided by the university.
- During the application process for the degree program, students will receive specific directions on how to apply for the UPA. It is important to carefully follow the application instructions to ensure a complete and accurate application.
- Successful UPA recipients will be notified after the deadline for submission, the scholarship committee will be reviewing all the applications including the submitted additional materials by the applicants.
UOW aims to streamline the process and make it more accessible for students. This efficient approach ensures that eligible candidates have the opportunity to apply for and secure the UPA, which assists them in covering their living expenses during their postgraduate studies.
Scholarship Awards
The 2023 stipend for the UPA amounts to $29,863. It is important to note that these stipends are non-taxable. Additionally, the stipends are subject to annual indexing, which means that the stipend amount may re-adjust to ensure that the students receive a fair and updated stipend.
The UPA provides financial support for a specified duration depending on the successful applicant’s degree level:
- Doctoral candidates: The UPA is awarded for a period of three and a half (3.5) years on a full-time basis. This extended duration allows doctoral candidates ample time to conduct in-depth research and complete their doctoral studies successfully.
- Masters of Philosophy: For students pursuing a Master of Philosophy degree, the UPA is granted for a duration of two (2) years. This timeframe offers sufficient support to complete the rigorous requirements of the research-focused Master’s program.
