About the Scholarship:
Simmons University is a college located in Boston, Massachusetts. Simmons University is a private women’s university that is co-ed at the graduate level. For a more personalized experience, students at Simmons can select from more than 60 undergraduate majors. During their studies, all students participate in internships, clinical placements, fieldwork, or research projects to obtain experience before entering the industry. Simmons has pioneered a higher education paradigm that other schools and universities are only now beginning to emulate: the integration of education for leadership in high-demand professional sectors with the intellectual foundation of the liberal arts. As a result, a Simmons graduate is not only equipped to work, but also to lead in professional, civic, and personal life – a vision of empowerment that Simmons refers to as “preparation for life’s work.” Simmons students like the small class sizes, outstanding internship opportunities, and individual attention from knowledgeable and practitioner instructors. Students mix their academic lives with campus group events and activities, sports, service initiatives, cultural events, campus traditions, and involvement in the larger Boston community. Through internships, fieldwork, and independent projects, Simmons’ independent learning requirement guarantees that students gain hands-on experience and professional contacts. Simmons also provides lifelong career services, outstanding alumnae mentorship programs, and a large alumnae network. Simmons has kept faithful to its great tradition of imaginative thinking and social responsibility since its founding in 1899, reinforcing its bedrock goal and providing transformative learning that connects passion with lifelong purpose and achievement. John Simmons, a wealthy textile maker, created the college because he believed that women should be given the opportunity to study for professional roles in society. The university is well-known for its progressive educational philosophy; the first African American student graduated in 1914, and it was one of only a few private colleges that did not impose admission quotas on Jewish students during the 1900s. It recently became the country’s third women’s college to admit transgender women. Simmons College consists of an academic campus and a residential campus, both of which are close to one another. The residential campus includes a theater, a dining hall, a fitness center, and a health center, in addition to many housing halls. There are also numerous student clubs and organizations, as well as the sporting teams known as the Sharks. In addition to the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Studies, the School of Library and Information Science, the School of Management, the School of Social Work, and the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, the undergraduate college provides more than 50 diverse programs. Former pupils include Gwen Ifill, managing editor of Washington Week, film producer Denise Di Novi, whose credits include Edward Scissorhands and Crazy Stupid Love, and six-time Grammy Award contender Nnenna Freelon.
