The late Dr. Peter Woodgate was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the SmartSat CRC’s organisational design and governing principles. From August 2019 until his tragic death in December 2022, he also served as the founding chair of the SmartSat organisation. Dr. Woodgate has been involved in the space and geospatial industries for over three decades.
In recognition of Peter’s immense contribution, passion, vision, and tireless commitment to the growth of these industries in Australia and around the world, the SmartSat CRC will bestow annual Dr. Peter Woodgate Scholarships for Earth Observation beginning in 2024 and continuing through 2026.
Starting in 2024 and continuing through 2026, a total of 96 scholarships will be given out. Anyone currently enrolled in or about to enroll in a program leading to a master’s or doctorate degree and interested in conducting research on the topic of earth observation is urged to apply. SmartSat values each and every student who participates in and completes its education and training programme and earns a scholarship from SmartSat.
The benefits of being a part of the SmartSat graduate network include access to the SmartSat conference series and other networking events, as well as a comprehensive professional development programme. Students benefit as well from our participation in an organisation that acts as a link between academia and business. Periods of placement with industry and end-user partners are highly recommended for SmartSat students. This allows them to get research experience in a professional as well as academic context.
