Nuffield College New Road, Oxford, OX1 1NF +44(0)1865 278500 [email protected]

On or around September 1, 2024, Nuffield College will appoint two Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellows (PPRFs) in the field of sociology, which includes but is not limited to sociology, demography, criminology, social and medical statistics, public policy, and social policy. The start dates for these fellowships will be set at the earliest convenience following that date. Anyone is welcome to submit to the College, although those now working or planning to work in the field of one of the College’s Sociology Fellows are strongly encouraged to do so. Nonetheless, this is not required to submit an application.

Research Fellows are expected to pursue advanced study and independent scholarly research in sociology broadly construed (as mentioned above), disseminate the results of their research through publication and participation in conferences and seminars, and contribute to the intellectual life of the College by organizing seminars, workshops, or conferences. Up to forty-eight hours per year, Research Fellows at the University of Oxford may take part in paid teaching or supervising opportunities inside the university.

To be considered, candidates need to have a PhD or DPhil in a relevant field, or be very close to finishing one. Candidates must have successfully defended their doctoral dissertation within the preceding three years from the time of application. Professional hiatuses (for reasons like family obligations) will be taken into account, and applicants are urged to share any relevant background information they may have. Priority will be given to applicants who have not held a similar research fellowship for longer than a year at the time the advertised fellowship is being taken up. In addition, prospective candidates should be well-versed in doing independent research and have a history of delivering high-quality publications at a level commensurate with their professional experience. In addition, those applying should have a history of producing high-quality content. They should be able to articulate themselves clearly in both spoken and written forms and be eager to make a significant intellectual contribution to campus.

The Fellowships are full-time, fixed-term jobs that can start as early as September 1, 2024, or as soon as is reasonably possible thereafter. As a general rule, employment will end on August 31, 2027. Candidates who have not yet completed their doctorate at the time of application should be advised that they may be needed to have submitted their doctoral dissertation for examination by the end of May 2024 in order to begin the Fellowship in September 2024. This is important for them to remember. Nuffield College will serve as the primary workplace for these positions. The salary for 2023/24 is 39,378 British pounds per year.

About the Scholarship Provider:

Graduate students at Oxford’s Nuffield College pursue postgraduate degrees in the social sciences, with a focus on sociology, politics, and economics. The automobile entrepreneur and philanthropist William Morris, better known as Lord Nuffield, gave land and £900,000 to the University of Oxford in 1937. Because of this, the University was founded. This gift provided the resources to construct the College and launch its endowment, which will sustain its operations in perpetuity. The College’s mission, from its inception, has been to serve as a conduit between the academic and public spheres.

Establishing a postgraduate institution that would encourage more cooperation between the academic and non-academic sectors in order to address social, economic, and political challenges was a main motivation for Lord Nuffield in founding the College. The University of Chicago has been and will continue to be a driving force behind many of the social sciences’ most important discoveries. These types of research include, for instance, the British Election research and the large study program on socioeconomic mobility in the United Kingdom. It was the birthplace of the “Oxford School” of Industrial Relations, a pioneer in the creation of cost-benefit analysis for developing countries, and a major contributor to the field of econometrics.
