About the Scholarship:
Appalachian State University, located in Boone, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, aims to create a sustainable community while also providing students with a variety of academic opportunities. Students can choose from approximately 170 majors at the university. Exercise science, psychology, and elementary education are the most popular programs. Every year, more than 40% of undergraduates participate in an academic internship. During the fall and spring semesters, undergraduates are also permitted to participate in stipend-funded research assistantships. On campus, there are over 400 student clubs, including 32 Greek life organizations. The ACCESS Scholarship is given to 50 North Carolina students from low-income families, allowing them to attend the university debt-free. In addition, the university offers numerous merit scholarships and departmental academic scholarships. Appalachian State University is a public university that was established in 1899. It has an undergraduate enrollment of 18,061 (fall 2020), a rural setting, and a campus size of 500 acres. The academic calendar is semester-based. Appalachian State University is ranked #6 in Regional Universities South in the Best Colleges 2022 edition. It charges $7,950 for in-state tuition and fees and $23,557 for out-of-state tuition and fees. From the Center of Entrepreneurship to the WASU student radio station, Appalachian State University provides numerous opportunities for students to learn outside of the classroom. Students can join a fraternity or sorority, choose from a variety of clubs, and attend events on the crowded Appalachian arts calendar. The Appalachian Popular Programming Society, whose members organize and promote film screenings, concerts, and other activities for their peers, also gives students the opportunity to plan events. Appalachian State has approximately 20 varsity, 20 club, and more than 80 recreational sports teams. The Mountaineer football team, which competes in the NCAA Division I Sun Belt Conference, once made the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine after an upset victory over Michigan. Appalachian State University has an easy time attracting undergraduates. The school is not only “extremely affordable,” but it also has “beautiful scenery” and “a strong sense of community that makes all of its students feel like they have found their place.” Undergrads also value the resources available to help everyone have a better experience, such as the school’s textbook rental program, which “saves most students hundreds of dollars per semester” and tries to ensure that students “do not have to stress about purchasing too many books.” App State also offers “excellent continuing education scholarships.” The university boasts a “terrific Honors College” and “a diverse range of majors.” Everyone wants you to succeed, whether it’s your advisors, professors, or even the people who work in the kitchen.” Its mission is to assist students in living “purposeful lives as engaged global citizens who understand their responsibilities in creating a sustainable future for all.”
According to the university’s leadership, sustainability is “not a trend, it is a tradition” at Appalachian State University. The university has its own wind turbine, as well as many energy-efficient buildings and a ‘Environment-Economy-Ecology’ House (E3 House), which is used to test new, environmentally friendly building techniques. Its campus is more than 1km above sea level, and students can snowboard, ski, fish, and hike in the surrounding mountains. Appalachian State University students outnumber permanent residents in Boone, which has 21 residence halls. Appalachian State University has dedicated visual and performing arts centers that host international artists. Every summer, students across the university campus celebrate visual and performing arts as part of the Appalachian Summer Festival. Simply put, it would take a lot of effort to be bored at App State. To begin with, “going to football games and tailgating” is always a big draw. “There are many, many clubs you can join and participate in,” such as the App State Running Club, the Finance Student Association, and the theater and music group. Students also observe that “Greek life and religious life [are] common, but not overpowering.” App State also has a sizable number of students who enjoy being outside. Undergrads can be found “lounging in hammocks or playing [various] outdoor sports” during the warmer months. Of course, “once the snow falls, kids have snowball fights or sled down the hills, enjoying the winter fun.” And for the daring, there’s plenty to do here. Unsurprisingly, the university has robust Outdoor Programs, with exciting trips such as “canoeing [and] stand-up paddle boarding” and “skiing and snowboarding in the winter.” There are also “many hiking trails within a short distance of campus.” Because of the school’s proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, “rock climbing is very popular here, and you can often hear rock climbers hooting and hollering as you hike a trail.”
