If you are a student from an African Union member state who is self-financing your postgraduate studies, you may be eligible for a scholarship in the amount of £4,500. This award will be provided to you in the form of a discount on your tuition cost for the first year of your program.
Because awards are going to be given out depending on the grades you got in your undergraduate degree, it is imperative that you make sure your applications for relevant classes are reviewed.

Students attending the University of Essex have access to a wide variety of support services, which includes assistance with obtaining visas, finding housing, and securing employment opportunities. At the University of Edinburgh, first-year students get orientation and general information about campus life in the week preceding up to the beginning of each academic semester. The Gustafsson & Skrondal Visiting Scholarship is administered by the University of Oslo’s Centre for Educational Measurement (CEMO). As part of the visiting scholar program, CEMO and the University of Oslo host a number of young researchers from Norway and elsewhere each year.
Eligibility for Scholarship.
- In order to be eligible for one of the University of Essex Scholarships for Africans, you will need to fulfill all of the following requirements:
- These scholarships can only be awarded to students who are domiciled outside of the United States and who provide their own financial support.
- ? Students are required to be normally living (for a definition of “ordinary residence,” see “Ordinary Residence,” below) in one of the African Union’s member states. Candidates for these scholarships must have graduated from an accredited high school or university in one of the countries listed above in order to be considered for grant consideration. Applicants are required to have earned a bachelor’s degree (this requirement includes integrated master’s degrees) with a grade that is at or above the minimum requirement. It is not possible to make up for a poorer grade earned in the Bachelor’s degree by earning a higher grade in the Master’s program;? The following types of master’s degree programs will be considered for funding: MA, MSc, MRES, and LLM. Courses must begin between October 2023 and January 2024 to be considered for funding. Applicants who have firmly accepted an offer of a place before the deadline of 14 July 2023 (for an October 2023 start) or the deadline of 13 October 2023 (for a January 2024 start) and who have met the academic conditions of entry will be considered for these scholarships.? Each student is only eligible to receive one scholarship grant from the University of Essex, and that award cannot be held in conjunction with any of the university’s other scholarships. Only the first year of master’s degree coursework at Essex is eligible for consideration for this award;? Applicants that are selected should be available to participate in promotional activities. *Students who receive an educational loan that they are responsible for repaying are nevertheless deemed to have self-funded their education.
- Specific Requirements for Each Country:
- Ghana: minimum of a 2:1 or a CGPA of 3.0/4.0 and above
- CGPA of 3 or higher out of 5 in Nigeria.
- Other countries that are part of the African Union must have a grade point average of at least two and a half (or the equivalent as outlined in our Postgraduate Admissions selection criteria).

If a student enrolls in one of the degree programs offered by SOAS University of London, they may be eligible to receive a fee waiver award in the amount of £5,000. This award is available to students who are interested in receiving a degree from SOAS University of London.
