WAAW (Working to Advance Science and Technology Education for African Women) Foundation is an international and non-profit organization established in 2007, The foundation was registered in the USA, South Africa, and Rwanda and headquartered in Nigeria. The foundation is dedicated to empowering African Women by providing STEM education, entrepreneurship skills training, and leadership. Their goal is to enable them to become one of the influential leaders who can make a positive impact on today’s global stage.
The Foundation’s Vision is a world in which African women emerge as strong and influential leaders who can change lives with the help of science, technology, and innovations. Established in 2007 by Dr. Unoma Okorafor during his doctoral studies, her motivation stemmed from her desire to empower more African Women to lead a healthy, educated life and engage in active community developments. Being a female voice for the STEM fields, Unoma started a mission to develop sustainable and enduring goals to support and educate African Women in Technology Innovations.
The Foundation recognizes women’s education and advanced knowledge in science and technology. It is the pivotal component needed to alleviate poverty and foster rapid development in Africa. The challenges that face most African women who often contend with the society’s prejudices and significant disadvantages in a predominantly male environment, remain unaddressed and necessitate an empathetic and strong advocate. The foundation firmly believes that empowering women is not only a gift but also for the betterment of their families and communities.

The foundation invites all Female African Students who are passionate about pursuing their undergraduate degree in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics to apply for the WAAW Foundation Scholarship for the academic year of 2023-2024. The scholarship will not only support them financially but will also provide mentorship, training, and other programs related to STEM fields that will equip them with the right tools for success.

Scholarship Eligibility
Before proceeding with the application interested students must meet the eligibility criteria of the scholarship.
- Applicants must be female and a citizen of Africa.
- Must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.
- Admitted to a STEM-related program at any of the Universities in Africa.
- Must be in their first to third-year students in any of the five-year courses in an eligible university.
- Must be able to demonstrate their financial needs.
- Must have a good academic record.
- Must be able to demonstrate their leadership skills, proven community services, and volunteering.
- Must be below the age of 32 at the time of the application.
Eligible Fields related to STEM:
- Engineering fields
- All Computer Science
- Math and Science related fields such as Industrial Chemistry, Agriculture, Geography, Nursing, Statistics, and others.
- Medical Courses such as BioMedical, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine Surgeon, Optometry, nursing, and such.
How to Apply for the Foundation Scholarship
Stage 1 Application Process
- Complete the online application form provided by the Foundation.
- Create an Essay on your future career goals and how the WAAW scholarship will support them are mandatory.
- Submit two letters of recommendation
- Shortlisted candidates must mail current University transcripts directly to the WAAW Foundation by January 2024.
Stage 2 (If Shortlisted):
- Attend the Zoom Interview.
- Provide two reference letters from your Head of Department and Lecturer academic mentors.
- Submit the updated academic transcript of records
Stage 3 for the Successful Students
- Receive the scholarship, contingent upon submitting relevant documents.
Application Important Timeline
- WAAW Foundation will accept all online applications beginning September 4, 2023.
- Keep in mind that any submitted application before September 4, will not be accepted and considered for evaluation.
- The WAAW Foundation Committee will be reviewing all applications.
- The deadline to complete and submit the application is until November 7, 2023.
- The successful applicants will be notified by May 2024.
All candidates must agree to the terms and conditions applied to the scholarship awards.
Scholarship Benefits
- The successful students will be awarded with $500 or equivalent in their home countries’ local currency.
- The scholars will have an opportunity to participate at the mentorship program and other related activities related to STEM fields to acquired the right knowledge and skills they need to succeed.
- The recipeints will also have an access to connect to other networks, professionals and industry leaders.
