Scholarship details
This scholarship was made possible by a bequest provided from the estate of Bert and Carmel Baulderstone, and it has been supported by contributions from their family, friends, and coworkers. After completing her initial four years of study at Calvary Hospital, Carmel Summerfield (later Baulderstone) became a registered nurse in the state of South Australia in 1944. She then went on to complete an additional nine months of training in Obstetrical Nursing in Launceston. Carmel’s nursing career came to a stop when she got married, which was common for women of her day. Despite this, she has maintained a relationship with nursing throughout her entire life. She was very involved in the Calvary Past Nurses Association and took a serious interest in the latest developments in nursing research and techniques. It is in keeping with Carmel’s passion of the nursing profession and her commitment to education that she offers financial assistance to students who wish to participate in clinical rotations.
The purpose of the Carmel Baulderstone Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to undergraduate nursing students who have been accepted to the Bachelor of Nursing programme at Flinders University and are enrolled in the second or third year of the programme in order for them to participate in a Professional Experience Placement at a College of Nursing and Health Sciences-approved clincial education facility that is located in a rural or remote area. Candidates ought to be able to demonstrate that they have a knowledge of and an awareness of the health needs of people living in rural and remote parts of Australia.
