Scholarship details
This programme is available to those who have recently received their PhDs as well as those who are currently pursuing their doctorates in the social sciences. The Academy Scholars Programme at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies seeks out outstanding scholars at the beginning of their academic careers and provides support for them. These scholars’ work must demonstrate excellence in a social science discipline while also demonstrating a command of the language of countries or regions outside of the United States or Canada, as well as knowledge or expertise of those areas. Their research should cut through traditional disciplinary boundaries and shed light on topics that are either domestic or comparative in scope, whether they are from the past or the present.
The Academy Scholars are an elite group of individuals who have demonstrated ingenuity, initiative, and creativity in their work. These individuals’ bodies of work have the potential to serve as a basis for careers in research universities or international organisations.
About the Scholarship Provider:
Founded in 1636, Harvard is often regarded as the finest educational institution in the United States. It is routinely regarded as one among the top universities in the world in terms of its impact, reputation, and scholarly pedigree. This is because of the university’s long tradition of excellence in education. The 209-acre Harvard campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts is home to ten colleges and schools awarding degrees, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, two theatres, and five museums. It is located three miles north of Boston. The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study is also located there. The collection includes an estimated 400 million pages of manuscripts, 10 million photos, 18 million books, and 180,000 serial publications, making it the largest academic library in the world.
Although the founding purpose of Harvard and other pre-Civil War American universities was to educate clergy, these schools gradually shifted towards a more secular focus and more inclusive admissions practises in the 20th century. The university’s over 21,000 students may all be seen swarming around the John Harvard statue in the centre of campus. Tourists and students often rub the bronze statue’s foot repeatedly in the hopes of attracting good fortune.
More than sixty percent of applicants take use of the university’s extensive financial assistance packages, made possible by the size of its endowment. Although admittance to Harvard is competitive and tuition is high, the institution provides substantial financial aid to its undergraduates. About 60% of students take advantage of these discounts. Freshmen eat in the beautiful and historic Annenberg Dining Commons, which is located in the Harvard Yard dorms. Harvard’s commitment to student involvement both on and off campus is reflected in the university’s over 400 student groups, which cover a wide range of interests and academic endeavours. Opportunities to participate in sports at Harvard Stadium, foster an entrepreneurial spirit at the Harvard Innovation Lab, and write for the Harvard Crimson are just a few highlights of student life at Harvard.
There are 62 billionaires and 359 Rhodes Scholars and 242 Marshall Scholars, all of whom graduated from Harvard. This university has produced eight U.S. presidents and a number of other notable figures. Many Oscar, Nobel, and Pulitzer Prize winners also attended Harvard. There have been a total of 108 Olympic medals won by alumni and current students of this school. The fact that this school has maintained its top position for so long disproves the notion that success automatically leads to complacency.
Cambridge, Massachusetts is home to the 5457-acre Harvard University campus. The ancient city greens, tree-lined squares, and peaceful banks of the Charles River in Cambridge, a significant city in the Boston metropolitan area, are all designed to be Cambridge’s focus points. Because of its central location in Cambridge, the Harvard University campus is within easy walking distance of the city’s best restaurants and boutiques. The citizens of Cambridge have access to Boston’s large public transport system. The central placement of the metro station, bus stops, and taxi stands makes travelling to any area of the city a breeze. The trip from the pitch to the heart of downtown Boston takes no more than half an hour.
There are now over 36,000 students enrolled at Harvard University, including over 13,000 graduate and professional students, over 16,000 students at Harvard Extension School, and over 6,600 students at Harvard College. Over 50 different states and 80 different nations are represented among Harvard’s student body, making it one of the most diverse in the country and the world. An estimated 400 million manuscript fragments, 10 million images, 124 million bookmarked web pages, and 5.4 terabytes of born-digital archives and manuscripts are among the 20.45 million objects in the Harvard University Library’s collection. It’s been called the “world’s largest academic library.” Therefore, the average annual cost of attendance at Harvard is reduced to $12,000 because to the need-based scholarships awarded to more than 60% of first-year students.
