Scholarship details
Romania is a country in southeastern Europe. Romania is located between the Balkans and Eastern Europe, thus bordering Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, and the Black Sea. By European standards, Romania is a large country. This means that there is much to explore, see and do.
Many international students are in the capital, Bucharest. But unlike many other countries, students can also be found in other places. Timișoara, Cluj-Napoca, and Iași are cities with a large number of students, and the nightlife and study experiences are up to par. In fact, Timișoara will even be the European Capital of Culture in 2023.
The most famous university in Romania is located in the capital. The University of Bucharest is known for its high-quality teaching and exciting programs. Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași are also good schools. The Western University of Timișoara is also known for its science and technology programs.
Together with the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, these four schools form the Universitara Consortium, the elite schools in Romania. It is the Romanian equivalent of the Ivy League or the Russell Group.
Romania is also the home of Bram Stoker’s sinister Count Dracula. Transylvania attracts millions of visitors every year, all eager to see the legendary Count’s castle for themselves. Transylvania, with its high hills and rocky peaks, is also famous for its natural beauty. Many Romanians will tell you that it is the nature of the country that sets it apart. Day trips from any city to the countryside are a common way to spend a weekend in Romania.
Romania also has beautiful beaches, with excellent bars and sea views. Trains head to the coastal city of Constanta from all over the country, making it a perfect weekend getaway. Read on to find out more about what it is like to study in Romania.
Study in Romania: student visas and permits
Romania is not in the border control-free Schengen Zone, but Schengen visas are valid in Romania, as are Romanian visas in Schengen, as well as in Bulgaria, Croatia, and Cyprus. However, they are not valid for Ireland. Romania’s visa policy is also not very different from that of the Schengen countries. Just remember, you will need to enter through Romania. You cannot, for example, arrive in Berlin and then move to Romania. Fortunately, there are plenty of transit options throughout Ireland and the UK.
Here is what you will need to obtain a study visa for Romania:
-
-
- Your passport and two passport-sized photos
- A letter of acceptance from your school, signed by the Ministry of Education.
- Proof of finances: must be at least €2,000 (US$2,400)
- Proof of a place to live: Your school can issue you a letter stating that you have a place to live in the dorms.
- Medical Insurance: If you are under twenty-six, your school covers you. If you are over twenty-six, you will need to pay a monthly fee of at least 49RON (US$12)
-
When you arrive at the border, you will need to be able to present your letter of admission and at least €2,000 (US$2,400) in cash or traveler’s checks.
You will need to apply for your visa in the country that issued your passport. If you don’t live there, you can apply by mail. You will only need to include your residency documents.
Once you are in Romania, you will have ninety days to register. You should go to the nearest Immigration Office. The headquarters is in Bucharest, but there are offices in other places.
