During their time at University College Dublin (UCD), recipients of the Ad Astra Academic scholarship will receive supplemental assistance as well as one-of-a-kind learning activities in order to encourage and reward their great academic performance.  These students will have a track record that demonstrates academic brilliance, the will to keep pushing themselves to succeed at the highest level possible, and the ability to realise their potential as leaders. The purpose of the initiative is to further cultivate their talents by offering these students a variety of perks, mentoring chances, and development opportunities that will enable them to perform to the best of their abilities and realise their full potential.

There are close to one hundred and twenty Ad Astra Academic Scholars currently enrolled in undergraduate programmes across the university. These programmes include Architecture, Engineering, Social Sciences, Law, Commerce, Economics and Finance, Science, Medicine, Nursing, Health & Performance Science, Linguistics, English with Creative Writing, History, Actuarial & Financial Studies, Psychology, Physiotherapy, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Nursing, and a variety of other programmes. School leavers who are interested in going to UCD and the Academy can choose from one of up to sixteen available spots in the academic course each year.

 

About the Scholarship Provider:

University College Dublin is among the top 1% of universities worldwide and is widely recognised as one of Europe’s most prestigious and research-intensive schools. The University of California, Davis is ranked among the top universities worldwide in 38 distinct topic areas, according to the QS World University topic Rankings for 2021. Among the subjects evaluated, Veterinary Science showed the most promise, earning Ireland the country’s highest overall grade. Scholarship Offer:

  • Those who are awarded a scholarship from Ad Astra also receive mentoring and a variety of other individualised services. For new scholars who join the programme beginning in September 2023, the value of the scholarship will be €3,000 for each year that they participate in the programme. Ad Astra scholars who choose to live on campus have the option of taking use of allocated on-campus housing, but they are responsible for covering the costs of that housing themselves.
  • In addition to this, scholars are entitled to a wide variety of academic privileges, including the following:
  • The assistance of a knowledgeable and devoted academic tutor
  • Throughout the course of the year, a series of workshops and seminars led by academics, notable alumni, and guest speakers is provided for the purpose of developing the intellectual, personal, and leadership potential of the scholars.
  • The possibility to participate in a module known as Ad Astra Professional & Personal Development during the stage two elective period
  • prospects for networking and professional advancement
  • Access to the Scholars’ Room Events Concerning the Formation of Teams
  • The scholarship is good for the duration of the undergraduate programme, provided that the recipient continues to satisfy the requirements for scholarship renewal on an annual basis.

 

The Gustafsson & Skrondal Visiting Scholarship is administered by the University of Oslo’s Centre for Educational Measurement (CEMO). As part of the visiting scholar program, CEMO and the University of Oslo host a number of young researchers from Norway and elsewhere each year.

 

Eligibility for Scholarship.

  • In order to be eligible for consideration for the awarding of these scholarships, candidates who are entering the University are needed to submit an additional application to the UCD Ad Astra Academy. The following are some of the requirements for this:
  • In order to be considered for the scholarship, applicants need to have achieved a grade point average of at least 6.00 on their first attempt at the Leaving Certificate.
  • In order to pass the GCE Advanced exam (also known as the A-Level), applicants need to have a total of four grades that are a perfect five out of five points each.
  • In the case of the International Baccalaureate, applicants are need to get in touch with the UCD Admissions office in order to receive guidance on how to convert their scores.
  • In order to pass any of the state examinations, you must have done all of your schooling in Ireland.
  • Candidates are required to submit an application through an online platform prior to the closing date and time of Monday, August 28th, 2023 at 23:59.
  • Any student who is chosen for further consideration must be available to attend the interview on the specified date and time.

Step 1: Fill Out the Application:

  • On July 28th, 2023, the Academy will reach out to those who have been successful in their nominations and extend an invitation to apply directly to the Academy by answering a set of questions.
  • The application consists of a personal statement that answers three questions and a statement of achievement in which applicants are asked to describe the extracurricular achievement(s) that they consider to be their greatest accomplishment(s) to date.
  • The Academy must have the applications sent to them via email on or before the 11th of August 2023 at the latest.

Stage 2: Interviews and the Selection of Final Candidates:

  • Only the application forms of those candidates whose qualifications allow them to be considered for shortlisting will be evaluated, with the statement of achievement receiving a weighting of sixty percent and the personal statement receiving a weighting of forty percent. Candidates that made the cut will receive an invitation to an interview.

Stage 3 – Offers:

  • Prior to the beginning of the school year, scholarship offers will be extended to up to eighteen of the applicants who were successful. The decision that was made by the panel of judges is final. The general conditions of the Ad Astra scholarships as well as the specific Terms and Conditions for each strand must be met in order to be eligible for any of the awards.

Required Forms and Documents for the Application

  • A personal statement and a statement of achievement ‘beyond the classroom’ are going to be required components of the application.  Examples of accomplishments that go ‘beyond the classroom’ include the following:
  • Participation and success in national competitions in a variety of fields, including but not limited to science, mathematics, politics, economics, and debate. Our scholars have participated in a variety of competitions, some of which include: the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition; the Irish European Union Science Olympiad; the Irish Mathematical Olympiad; the Soroptimist International Girls Public Speaking Competition; the Irish EU Science Olympiad; becoming an Iveagh Scholar in the Department of Foreign Affairs; debating in the National Model United Nations competition; attending the Young Scientist Business Bootcamp; winning the Generation Euro Economics Competition; and winning the Soroptimist International Girls Public Speaking Competition
  • Accomplishment on the International Stage. The following are some examples of activities in which our academic scholars have participated in the past: debated in the EU Parliament building in Strasbourg as part of the Euroscola competition; represented the Irish Sailing Association Youth Academy in places such as Youth Europeans in Norway and ISAF Youth Worlds in New Zealand, achieving 4th place; won bronze in the European Union. achieved bronze in the International Junior Science Olympiad; represented Ireland at the 64-country International German Olympiad in Berlin; won gold at the Irish EU Science Olympiad; represented Ireland at the Intern
  • A record of civic engagement or voluntary work is required. Some of the things that our academic scholars have accomplished include obtaining Silver or Gold Gaisce Awards, travelling overseas to serve in locations like Lourdes in France, Zambia, and India, being given the Mayo Young People of the Year Award, and raising more than €4,000 for The Hope Foundation.
  • Some evidence of creativity or entrepreneurial spirit. Our academic scholars have participated in a variety of activities, including the following: organising Mental Health Week in their respective schools; establishing the volunteer group ‘Students for CRY,’ which supported 13 ‘hamlets’ in the Kutch area of Gujarat, India for an entire year with funds of slightly less than €4,000 – supplying over 930 children and their families with food, water, electricity, education, birth registration, and healthcare; creating mini companies in transition year with high success rates; entering academic competitions; and entering
  • Leadership experience in a school, club, or sporting environment is required. Our academically talented students have gone on to achieve many things, including but not limited to the following: Head Girl or Boy; member of the student council team; captain of the junior Irish debating team; captain of school senior football team; captain of school hockey team; captain of school athletics team; elected to participate in the McKinsey Leadership Academy; elected as Vice Chairperson of Monaghan Youth County Council; and many more.
  • The attainment of success in cultural, musical, or creative endeavours. Examples of what our academic scholars have achieved include: becoming a Gaelic games referee; runners-up in the hockey All-Ireland Schoolgirls Cup; been the youngest member of the local club Senior Hurling and Football teams; becoming a qualified sailing instructor; been a member of and touring abroad with the National Youth Orchestra; been a member of the Dublin Minor football team and winning Leinster League Champions; reaching the final of the 200m in the European Youth Olympics; winning county championships with local hurley and football teams; becoming captain of the school’s senior football team; achieving Grade 8 piano, violin etc.; nominated as youth sailor of the year; Feis Ceoil winner; runners up in Leinster Schoolgirls Hockey Senior Cup finals; qualifying as a lifeguard; being an active member of Scouting Ireland; being a member of music bands and performing in venues such as The Globe, The International, Bloom in the Park and winning the opportunity to perform at Longitude Music Festival.
  • You will be needed to give evidence of the accomplishments that you stated in your application by providing relevant support papers in order to satisfy this requirement.

If a student enrolls in one of the degree programs offered by SOAS University of London, they may be eligible to receive a fee waiver award in the amount of £5,000. This award is available to students who are interested in receiving a degree from SOAS University of London.

  • Are you interested, and do you qualify? To apply for a scholarship, visit the University College Dublin website at sisweb.ucd.ie. Scholarships will be given to school leavers who will be enrolling at UCD in September 2023 and will be based on academic requirements, as well as an online application and an interview.
  • Students have until Monday, August 28th 2023 at the absolute latest to finish an application form that may be found online.
  • The application consists of a personal statement that answers three questions and a statement of achievement in which applicants are asked to describe the extracurricular achievement(s) that they consider to be their greatest accomplishment(s) to date.
  • For the accomplishments that have been mentioned, supporting documentation is required. This documentation may take the form of certificates, evidence of formal recognition, or letters from coaches, teachers, or organisations.
  • Students are required to upload a photo of either their high school diploma or the results of an examination that is similar.
