Scholarship details
Microsoft is a pyramid organization where the basic unit is the team.
A team is usually made up of 6 programmers, 6 testers, and 1-2 program managers, plus a leader for each of the three disciplines. One step higher there is a section chief (Manager) for each discipline who is in charge of 6 Leads. And so, 6 by 6 and always following the format of the trios, the pyramid is built up to the vice president of the product (Windows, for example) who reports directly to the CEO.
In the same team, there are people of different ranks who work on more or less complicated topics depending on their skill and experience. Even so, there is a very good vibe and no colleague looks at you over his shoulder or gives you orders for having a higher level than you, but they are always willing to help.
To improve the relationship between colleagues in the same team and between teams in a section, from time to time the bosses organize an event to have fun, socialize, and for employees to get to know each other. This type of event counts as time worked (these hours do not have to be recovered) and it varies on each occasion. I have been taking bowling, canoeing, human foosball, and much more.
Microsoft’s central campus is in Redmond, a city located in the state of Washington, 20m by car from Seattle. Close to 40,000 employees (of the 90,000 in the world) work there in more than 60 buildings.
To get an idea of the Microsoft campus, imagine the campus of a large university. Not only are there office buildings, but there are also green spaces, soccer fields, a shopping center with shops and restaurants, and even residential complexes. It’s like a small town within Redmond.
That is so big that to move between the buildings (if you have a meeting in one that is not yours, for example) there is an internal taxi service. You call a phone number, say you want to go from building 26 to 42, and a few minutes later a Toyota Prius arrives to pick you up.
Microsoft also has a free bus system called Connector to get to and from work without having to take a car. If you are one of those who prefer the bicycle, Microsoft gives you financial help to buy it and you can use the showers that are in the parking lot of most buildings.
