About the Scholarship
The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) is proud to offer up to 10 fully-funded Ph.D. scholarships to study in Germany. International students are eligible to apply for these positions.
In addition, the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) “From Molecules to Organisms” offers excellent interdisciplinary training in the disciplines of structural, molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, as well as bioinformatics, genomics, and evolutionary biology.
Above all, the goal of the school is to equip the next generation of scientists with the knowledge and skills to study complex biological processes, which cannot be adequately understood within the confines of individual disciplines, in the context of whole organisms.
What You Need to Know About the IMPRS International Ph.D. Scholarship 2023 in Germany

The research topics offered to students are drawn from the following traditionally separate fields:
- Biophysics
- Biochemistry and structural biology.
- Bioinformatics and computational biology.
- Molecular and cellular biology.
- Developmental biology and genetics.
- Genomics and proteomics.
- microbiome science
- Evolutionary biology and ecology.
IMPRS International Ph.D. Scholarship Worth
All Ph.D. positions are fully funded, usually through support contracts from the Max Planck Society or equivalent contracts from the University of Tübingen. The contracts include full coverage of the German social security system, as well as health insurance. Ph.D. students can expect to have a disposable income of at least €1,200 per month.
Financing is usually granted for three years in the first instance. The funding will be extended to a fourth year if the circumstances of the doctoral project justify it.
There are no tuition fees. Enrollment (matriculation) at the University of Tübingen is optional and costs approximately €150/semester.

IMPRS International Ph.D. Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:
Applicants must have, or expect to have, a natural science or computer science degree from a master’s, diploma, or equivalent program.
Your current skills and knowledge should be a good match with your proposed doctoral research area.
To begin in September 2023, all degree work must be completed by September 1, 2023. Please feel free to contact the IMPRS Coordinator for additional information.
Bachelor’s Only Applicants: In rare cases, exceptionally talented students who have only a bachelor’s degree may be admitted to the IMPRS. You must have a 4-year honors degree, have excellent qualifications and possess extensive and relevant research experience.
In such cases, additional study requirements may be assigned, which will be met during the first year of participation in IMPRS.
If you earned your degree(s) outside of the European Higher Education Area, your application must include scores from the GRE General Test.
To have your scores submitted to us online, please provide our institution code: 4791. Applicants with a GATE score from India may provide it instead of, or in addition to, the GRE. If you have TOEFL scores, these cannot replace GRE scores but can be submitted in addition.
NOTE: They evaluate the application as a whole and therefore do not use fixed criteria regarding GRE scores.
As a guide, successful applicants have generally scored above 152 on the GRE verbal test and above 155 on the quantitative test. Good test results do not guarantee admission to the program; rather, they provide evidence for us to seriously consider the request.
