Applications are invited from individuals interested in pursuing a degree program at the University of Ghana. Scholarships are available at the University of Ghana for interested candidates.
The objective is to show how the global is productive of the local, and how institutions, actors, practices, norms, and discourse mix to produce novel forms of security governance and global-local links.
The University of Ghana, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC), the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS), and the Danish Institute Against Torture (DIGNITY) are undertaking a collaborative research project on Domestic security implications of United Nations peacekeeping (D-SIP) in Ghana.
The aim of D-SIP is to understand the links between peacekeeping contributions, national security provisions, and stability drivers in Ghana.
By generating knowledge about how participation in international peacekeeping shapes the legitimacy and effectiveness of security institutions and practices in troop-contributing countries, D-SIP offers insight into the broader dynamics of peace and security. construction of the state.
About the University of Ghana
Since the early 2000s, UN peacekeeping has increased in scope and complexity. Global spending in 2016 was $7.87 billion with 118,792 employees deployed across 16 operations. The sustainability of UN operations depends on the countries of the global South that make up the top ten troop contributors.
Their motivations for providing peacekeepers are economic, political, institutional, and regulatory. However, there is a lack of knowledge about how participation in peacekeeping impacts the internal security and stability of troop-contributing countries, both at the national and local levels. Ghana is a privileged space to explore this issue.
The country has participated in more than 30 UN peacekeeping operations since the 1960s and is among the world’s largest troop contributors. Despite changes in governments and regimes, Ghana is committed to contributing to international peacekeeping and continues to play a vital role as a pioneer in peacekeeping.
It is a country characterized by rapid economic growth and democratic consolidation: a stable country in an unstable region facing long-term and emerging security threats, including the effects of refugee flows and insurgent groups. Ghana’s sustained contribution to peacekeeping and conflict prevention missions depends on maintaining this status.
Thus, Ghana offers insight into the links between contributing peacekeepers, building legitimate security institutions, and the drivers of national and regional stability.
Ph.D. Scholarships at the University of Ghana
D-SIP is calling for Ph.D. applications that explore how exposure to international peacekeeping training and deployments abroad impacts security discourses and practices within Ghana.
The empirical focus is at the national level, as well as the local level in two urban localities, Accra and Tamale, as well as in rural Ghana. D-SIP applies a multidisciplinary approach with an emphasis on ethnographic fieldwork methods.
In general, the objective is to show how the global is productive of the local, and how institutions, actors, practices, norms, and discourse mix to produce novel forms of security governance and global-local links.
As part of the D-SIP program, the University of Ghana invites interested and qualified Ghanaians, with MPhil/MA/MSc/LLM degrees in law, social or political science, to apply for 3 Ph.D. positions.
Successful candidates will enroll in the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana and receive a Ph.D. in African Studies with a specialization in security and peacekeeping. They will be overseen by a joint team of D-SIP researchers from the University of Ghana, KAIPTC, DIIS, and DIGNITY.
Candidates will spend their experiential learning adjuncts at DIIS and KAIPTC, including study stays and dissertation writing time at both institutions, in Accra and Copenhagen respectively. Candidates will be fully integrated members of the D-SIP research team. Successful candidates will receive a stipend for the period of 4 of their studies, and all costs for fieldwork, travel related to Ph.D. training, and lectures abroad will be covered by the D-SIP.
What You Need To Know About Fully Funded Scholarships At The University Of Ghana, 2023
Positions are for four (4) years full-time and will begin on February 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. While conducting qualitative fieldwork in Accra, Tamale, and/or another location in rural or urban Ghana, the three successful Ph.D. candidates will each take a specific thematic approach, for example:
- Security organization at the national level and how it has been influenced by the Ghanaian peace experience;
- How security is provided in Accra and how Ghana’s experience in peacekeeping has shaped policing at the local level; Y
- How security is provided in Tamale and how Ghana’s experience in peacekeeping has shaped policing at the local level.
- Any other issue related to the provision of security and peacekeeping in rural or urban areas of Ghana.
Successful Ph.D. candidates will contribute to the overall research objective of identifying the domestic security implications of UN peacekeeping contributions in Ghana. D-SIP is funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Scholarship Worth:
Departments are expected to make a 50% contribution to the award. All requests must be discussed with the appropriate Department Manager prior to submission.
How to Apply for the Fully Funded Scholarships at the University of Ghana
Potential applicants are invited to prepare a 4-5 page concept note (maximum 2,000 words) that, with reference to the selected Ph.D. focus (select from above), describes a detailed approach to the proposed doctoral project, as well as assumptions and research questions.
Applicants, who wish to apply for the Ph.D. position under two or more subject areas, you must develop a separate concept note for each of the focus areas. The following details should be included in the concept note:
- Statement of the research problem and how it will be investigated using more specific research questions.
- Discussion of the analytical framework of the research problem in light of the relevant theory.
- Description of the geographical and sociopolitical context of the study (Accra / Tamale).
- Presentation of the research design and the methods that will be used to generate the data.
- Practical considerations.
- Ethical considerations.
- Time schedule.
