About the Scholarship:

Sharif Institution of Technology, also known as SUT (Persian: ), is a public research university located in Tehran, Iran. It is widely acknowledged as the preeminent educational establishment in the United States for subjects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The university’s international campus may be found on Kish Island, which is situated in the Persian Gulf. Formerly known as the Aryamehr University of Technology (Persian: , romanized: Dneghe Sannatiye ryamehr), the university was founded in 1966 during the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. Following the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the university was renamed Tehran University of Technology for a brief period of time. Following the events of the revolution, the educational institution was given the name Majid Sharif Vaghefi. At the present time, the university offers undergraduate as well as graduate level programs across its 15 primary departments. About 6,000 students are enrolled in undergraduate programs, and another 4,700 are enrolled in graduate programs, and they come from each of Iran’s 31 provinces. Both public and private sources contribute to Sharif University’s budget, the former coming from the government.

The Iranian Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology administers a nationwide entrance examination each year, and only the top 800 students out of a pool of 500,000 applicants are granted entry to the undergraduate program at Sharif University. According to the results of the Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences rankings conducted by the Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2013, SUT was rated fifth in the Middle East. According to the results of the 2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, it is ranked between 251 and 275 among the best institutions in the world and 37th in Asia. SUT placed first in the Middle East, sixth in Asia, and 27th in the globe in the top 100 list of newer universities published by Times Higher Education in 2014. Newer universities are defined as those that are less than 50 years old. SUT was formed in 1966 with the purpose of training and supplying a portion of the essential expert human resources of the country on a level that is comparable to that of credible institutions all over the world. It is a young and rapidly expanding pioneer in both the basic and applied sciences, especially when compared to other institutions throughout the world.

To teach students the advanced knowledge and techniques required to participate in the fields of engineering and technology and to cultivate them into creative engineers, good scientists, and innovative technologists are the three primary objectives of Sharif University of Technology (SUT). The first objective is to establish an institution where students can receive instruction in both theoretical and applied sciences, with a particular emphasis on the particular needs of Islamic society. The second and third objectives are to educate engineers who are ready to be employed. At the graduate and doctorate levels, there is a strong focus placed on the encouragement of research that draws from multiple disciplines. On the basis of this, SUT offers students who are attempting to increase their level of knowledge a setting that is both dynamic and scientific. In other words, individuals who are attempting to grasp and comprehend scientific realities and facts, as well as those who are attempting to impart this information to others, will find a home at the SUT. The university, which is known throughout Iran for having a reputation as being one of the country’s most prestigious institutions of higher education, provides a wide variety of graduate and postgraduate degrees in its 15 departments, and engineering is just one of the fields that can be studied at the university.

The Department of Philosophy of Science, the School of Management and Economics, and the Department of Languages and Linguistics are some of the other schools within this university that are not related to engineering. Students can choose to study courses in the humanities and social sciences in addition to their technical studies. Each department has its own laboratories, libraries, and workshops. The Sharif University of Technology has a competitive admissions process for first-year students who intend to study there. On Iran’s national entrance examination, which is administered by the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Higher Education, admission is restricted to only those applicants who score in the top 5 percent of the whole pool. Mahmoud Fotouhi Firouzabad, a graduate of Sharif University of Technology who also attended the University of Tehran and the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, is currently serving as the chancellor of Sharif University of Technology (SUT). Ali Larijani, the current speaker of the Iranian parliament; Peyman Yazdanian, a renowned pianist; Ali Daei, the all-time best goalscorer in international football; and Elshan Moradi, a chess grandmaster, are only few of the notable people that graduated from SUT.
