Scholarship details
Brian was always expanding his knowledge, both of how things functioned and of how they could be improved. He did not stay inside the confines of the lines but instead came up with different ways to express himself. Brian was a friend to individuals of all walks of life and had no prejudices against any of them.
Prior to his passing, Brian had been preparing for a trip across China by studying the language in order to better navigate the country during his travels. It was going to be an off-road motorbike ride that would take him on a voyage of self-discovery, dedication, overcoming adversity, and finding beauty in the process.
The excursion was beautiful because it was a representation of the treasure that lies dormant within each and every one of us. The journey is only valuable if one goes through the effort required to triumph over one’s own personal challenges, to unearth the strength that lies dormant within oneself, and to put that newly found strength to work in order to make one’s ambitions a reality.
The seemingly impossible became a reality for Brian after he conquered numerous obstacles throughout his life. As a means of paying tribute to Brian and preserving his legacy, Guy and Doris McCloskey, along with their children, grandchildren, and other loved ones, have established a very significant Fully Funded SOKA University of America Scholarship fund that will be made accessible to students who have been accepted to SUA. Please read about Brian’s experience at www.bdmsua.org/about-ba before completing this application for the scholarship. The instructions can be found there.
About the Scholarship Provider:
The Soka University campus can be found in Hachioji, which is a neighbourhood in Tokyo, Japan. The university is privately run. 1971 was the first year that classes were held for first-year students, and 1975 was the first year that classes were held for graduate students. In the year 2001, the state of California became home to the very first campus of an institution of higher learning that would later become known as the Soka University of America. In addition to that, it gives students the opportunity to earn degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Soka University, which is the college’s parent institution, established the Soka Women’s College in 1985, and both schools are currently located on the same site. The special educational approach at Soka lays an emphasis on being a leader and contributing to society as a whole. Students are expected to acquire a language that is different from their mother tongue, and the cost of studying abroad in a country where that language is spoken is incorporated into the tuition for that student’s curriculum. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to concentrate their studies in one of the following five areas: environmental studies, the humanities, international studies, the biological sciences, or the social and behavioural sciences. The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and offers nine different varsity sports teams for both male and female students. These teams compete against other colleges and universities across the country.
The institution is divided into eight distinct faculties, each of which focuses on a distinct academic discipline: economics, business management, law, nursing, science and engineering, liberal arts, letters, and education. Some of the subjects that are taught in law, education for teachers, law and letters, as well as engineering, can be found in graduate schools. The university encourages collaborative partnerships with around two hundred more educational institutions that are located in 61 different countries throughout the world. Approximately 900 students choose to pursue their education in a different nation each and every year. There are approximately 52 different nationalities represented within the student population of international students at Soka University.
There are now 11 classes offered at the institution that are instructed in English, and there are plans to add more in the not too distant future. Students not just from Japan but also from other nations who are interested in enhancing their linguistic abilities are strongly invited to sign up for these programmes. The language of instruction for students’ various classes can be either English or Japanese, depending on which of the two is preferred. Throughout the course of the academic year, the Office of International Affairs hosts a number of activities that are designed expressly with international students in mind. The office conducts a welcome party for international students in the spring and autumn, as well as a new year’s celebration on the first of January for students who will be spending New Year’s Day in Japan to experience the customs associated with the new year, and it also provides sightseeing excursions for international students.
Students are given the chance to be a part of a wide variety of sports teams, some of which include American football, baseball, football, handball, and rugby. Additionally, there are opportunities to compete in a variety of other sports. In addition to this, there are a multitude of additional student organisations that cater to a wide range of hobbies and passions. There are a wide variety of them, some of which are astronomy, debate, flower arranging, photography, and Japanese calligraphy. Other topics include a great deal more.
