The interior of a fusion reactor is one of the most difficult environments that scientists are aware of. Temperatures can range from the highest in the solar system (100,000,000 °C at the center of the plasma) to the lowest (-269 °C in the cryopump) all within a few meters, and there is also the risk of irradiation damage and electromagnetic loads. This has already been accomplished, albeit for limited amounts of time, at JET, the world’s largest fusion device, which is housed at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (UKAEA) in the United Kingdom.
However, one of the greatest engineering challenges of the 21st century will be to build a device that can produce energy that can be sold in commercial quantities while continuing to function normally under these extreme conditions.

Eligibility for Scholarship.
- The applicants’ applications will be evaluated based on whether or not they satisfy all of the following criteria:
- A solid foundation in either numerical methods or machine learning is required for this position.
- The ability to program in compiled and interpreted languages, as well as CUDA, and previous experience with engineering analysis are all required for this position. Having experience with engineering analysis is also desirable.
