About the Scholarship Sponsor:
The Institution of Adelaide is the official name of Adelaide’s public university. Adelaide, the state capital, sits on the coast of South Australia. In 1874, Walter Watson Hughes, a copper miner and local philanthropist, established the town. Adelaide Institution, third oldest in Australia, presented its first formal lecture in Latin in 1876. Bachelor of Arts was the only undergraduate degree available at the school back then.
Former lecturer at Christ Church College and Oxford alumnus Dr. Augustus Short was the institution’s first vice-chancellor. Before that, he was a professor at Christ Church University. In order to keep the University of Adelaide at the forefront of technical advancement, Short exerted a great deal of effort. To do this, he aimed to set the program apart from the standard Classics curriculum at Oxford at the time by including modern topics such as science, literature, art, and philosophy. In 1882, his wish came true as the university became the first in all of Australia to award degrees in a variety of scientific disciplines.
The current mission of the institution is to “find new information,” “pursue innovation,” and “train tomorrow’s educated leaders who are autonomous, creative thinkers with an international view.” It offers degrees from a total of five different faculties, and it is a member of the Group of Eight, an alliance of Australia’s top universities with a focus on research. Adelaide is home to about 25,000 students and 3,600 faculty and staff. Of these students, 30% are foreign and come from over 100 different countries.
The university has four locations throughout the state of South Australia, and through a partnership with the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre in Singapore, students are now able to complete their degree requirements in both Australia and Singapore. The University of Adelaide is located in South Australia. Besides the aforementioned nations, others to consider for study abroad programs include Hong Kong, France, the Netherlands, and others. These opportunities are available. Five Nobel laureates and 110 Rhodes Scholars are just a few of the illustrious graduates from this university. Other notable alums include Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Robin Warren, who discovered the connection between peptic ulcers and the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). The Adelaide team’s prospects of making history are a source of pride and drive as they push forward in pursuit of that objective.
