About the Scholarship Provider:

The University of Glasgow was established in 1451 with the help of a Papal Bull. It’s the fourth-oldest in the US and the 5th-oldest in Scotland, making it the 4th-oldest in the US. Along with Edinburgh and St. Andrews and Aberdeen, it was regarded one of the four principal capitals of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century. The University of Glasgow is one of only eight universities in the entire United Kingdom to be considered “old.” It is divided into four distinct faculties: science and engineering; the arts; medicine, veterinary medicine, and the life sciences; and social sciences. There are five separate academic departments here. There are several regional campuses of the larger institution located all over the United States. Gilmorehill is home to Hillhead University’s flagship campus. The Bearsden neighborhood of Garscube Estate is home to the university’s dental clinic, athletic grounds, and veterinary college. The university’s medicine program is located at the Gartnavel Royal Hospital on Great Western Road.

The Crichton campus and the teaching facility of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Dumfries are jointly administered by the Open University, the University of the West of Scotland, and the University of Glasgow. Students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels come from more than 140 different countries. Over 3,400 people are employed in teaching and research roles, making the University of Glasgow one of the city’s largest employers. This prestigious university is part of the Russell Group of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious educational schools. The University of Glasgow has a campus in Garscube, as well as an urban location in Gilmorehill. Dumfries, to the south of Glasgow, is the third possible location. Getting to either of the cities is a breeze thanks to the abundance of nearby bus hubs and subway stations.

Glasgow’s central location near two major airports and two big railway terminals makes it ideally situated for access to the rest of the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. Glasgow is in a prime position, and this proximity allows the city to make the most of its situation. Glasgow, the largest metropolis in Scotland, is one of the top five most visited places in the United Kingdom, as reported by the Office for National Statistics. This widespread acclaim is due in no small part to the city’s large student community. Glasgow has a thriving theater scene, a wide variety of high-end shopping options, and regularly hosts major international events, making it one of the liveliest towns in Europe. Glasgow is ranked highly by both Frommer’s and Condenaste as one of the best places to visit in the United Kingdom. The neo-Gothic heart of school, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, was one of the first buildings on campus and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The University of Glasgow in Glasgow is home to the oldest Faculty of Engineering in the United Kingdom as well as Scotland’s only Department of Aerospace Engineering.

Winners of the World-Changing Alumni Award are high-achieving alumni who have gone on to change the world in meaningful ways. In 2017, Susanne Mitschke was crowned winner, while in 2016, Matt Fountain took first place. The university has produced a number of notable people, including Bonar Law, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, and William Lamb. If an international student receives an admissions offer and submits all required materials by the application deadline (usually in August), they will be guaranteed housing. It takes about half an hour to walk from the main college to the farthest of the city’s 3,500 hotel rooms. Northwest of the metropolitan region is where you’ll find this section of the city. Glasgow’s Accommodation Office helps students not only locate university-affiliated housing, but also private rental market housing. Private accommodations can be anything from a hotel to a house.

The primary campus of the University of Glasgow is situated about four kilometers west of the city center, in the hip West End area of Glasgow. Glasgow, the biggest city in Scotland, is regularly rated among the friendliest in the world, so it’s no surprise that it made Time magazine’s “Best Cities in the World in 2019” list. (Rough Guides 2019). Glasgow’s year-round calendar of world-class events and festivals, varied cultural destinations, outstanding architecture, numerous parks and open spaces, fantastic shopping, and vibrant nightlife have helped to cement the city’s position as one of Europe’s busiest. Glasgow is one of the busiest towns in Europe because of all of these reasons.

All present students at the University of Glasgow have access to the Student Counseling and Advisory Service. When foreign students arrive at Glasgow Airport, the Welcome Team will be there to greet them and help them get on the free shuttle that will take them to their new dorms on campus. Beginning international students in the United States are invited to attend an orientation workshop held by International Student Support each trimester. Students whose first tongue is not English can also enroll in pre-sessional English classes.
