Scholarship details
The 9th edition of Visa For Music, Africa’s and the Middle East’s first professional music market, will take place in Rabat, Morocco, from November 16th to 19th, 2022. A certified jury will choose 30 artists or groups to perform in front of music business experts from around the world.
About the Scholarship:
The African music scene is alive and well, as well as diverse and inventive. Despite this, African and Middle Eastern artists are underrepresented in the international art world. Visa For Music, Africa’s and the Middle East’s first professional music market and festival, was formed out of this dilemma in 2014. Visa For Music is a one-of-a-kind event that brings together Moroccan and international music business players. The continent’s musicians and artistic creations are featured in Visa For Music. They’re also conferences, speed meetings, workshops, and training events that let people meet new people and expand their horizons. Every year for four days, Visa For Music is the pulse of Rabat, the “City of Light and Moroccan Capital of Culture,” which pulses to the beat of music. The African music industry needed a new lease on life, therefore Visa For Music was born. Visa For Music (VFM) is the first professional market/festival of African and Middle Eastern musics: it is a new event that began in 2013 and is now in its fifth edition, with roughly 30 showcases at its heart, as well as conferences, speed-meetings, workshops, and training. This initiative arose from a paradox: on the one hand, African and Middle-Eastern artists’ lack of international visibility, and on the other hand, these musicians’ significant aesthetic energy and musical innovation. To combat this issue, Visa For Music’s initial purpose is to expose the artistic production of Africa and the Middle East, particularly in the realms of world music and contemporary music. The continent’s artistic and cultural potential is enormous, but it is largely untapped. Professional frameworks that are tailored to the needs of artists are missing, forcing artists to travel overseas, particularly to Northern countries. As a result, African countries do not reap nearly as much profit from their artists’ economic spin-offs as European and North American economies do. Visa For Music’s core aims are part of a global conversation on cultural rights in the context of long-term cultural development. The goal of Visa For Music is to contribute to the professionalization and structure of the music and cultural industry in general, as well as to the creation of direct and indirect jobs. Visa For Music’s purpose is to assist change agents by hosting workshops and training sessions to equip them with the skills they need to expand their activities. Visa For Music’s purpose is to help structure and professionalize the music industry in Morocco and across the continent by enhancing the capacities of musicians and cultural players.
