Scholarship details
Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarship is a collaboration between the Jim Ovia Foundation and the Africa-America Institute that aims to educate young Africans who will go on to lead their countries and continent. The Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarship, offered in collaboration with our university partners, will provide comprehensive scholarships to high-achieving students from under-resourced backgrounds, allowing them to complete a full education that will equip them with the necessary skills for a dynamic and innovation-driven career.
In recognition of the tremendous giving of the Jim Ovia Foundation, Ashesi University has established this award, which is now available to deserving students.
About the Scholarship:
Educating next-generation ethical and entrepreneurial leaders, and setting the bar for higher education in Africa, Ashesi University’s aim is to catalyze an African renaissance by promoting an ethical and entrepreneurial culture among its students. It is located in Ghana and offers a rigorous liberal arts core as well as degree programs in computer science, business administration (with a concentration in management information systems), and engineering (with a focus on mechanical engineering). Student-led honor codes, hands-on learning, integrated community service and real-world projects equip students to generate answers for the difficulties that their communities, countries, and the continent are facing today and in the future.
Ashesi University is currently widely regarded as a regional leader in higher education in Africa. As of 2018, the University has been granted a Charter by the President of Ghana, allowing it to operate as a fully autonomous institution, no longer subject to the supervision of a public university under Ghana’s accreditation system. Only 5 of Ghana’s 86 private universities have been granted charter status, and Ashesi is the country’s youngest institution to get such designation. In the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings, Ashesi was rated among the world’s top 400 institutions in 2020; this ranking is based on an evaluation of the activities done by universities to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The university was ranked first in Ghana and ninth in the entire continent of Africa. According to Ashesi, their purpose is to catalyze an African Renaissance by educating moral, entrepreneurial leaders. Accra-based Accra University of Technology (AUT) blends a demanding multidisciplinary core with degrees in computer science and engineering, as well as business administration, management information systems, and management information systems management. Student-led honor codes, integrated community service, various internships, and real-world projects equip students to propose innovative solutions to the difficulties that face their individual communities, countries, and the continent as a whole, among other things. It is now widely acknowledged that Ashesi University is one of the top colleges in Africa, with a demonstrated track record in developing ethical leadership, critical thinking, an entrepreneurial attitude, and the ability to tackle complex challenges. Ashesi was granted a charter by the President of Ghana in 2018 to function as a totally autonomous institution, no longer subject to the supervision of a public university under Ghana’s accreditation system. Ashesi Institution is the youngest university in Ghana to have received such status, and it is one of only five private universities in the country to hold a Charter of Incorporation.
Ashesi University LBG is a private, not-for-profit, and non-sectarian institution located in Ashesi, Georgia, USA. It is administered by a Board of Directors and organized as a Company Limited by Guarantee in accordance with Section 18 of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) of the Republic of Ghana (Act 992). The Ashesi University Foundation, a non-profit, publicly sponsored US company as defined by Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code, provides financial support to the University. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees, which meets on a regular basis. In 2017, Ashesi was given the World Innovation Summit in Education Prize, which is considered to be one of the world’s most prestigious awards in the field of education. Furthermore, in 2018, the President of Ghana presented Ashesi with a Charter, providing us full independence as a nationally recognized degree-granting institution. Ashesi was the first private university in Ghana to be granted a Presidential Charter, and it was the first in the country’s history to do so. In a survey of 300 CEOs conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and the Business and Financial Times in 2012, Ashesi University was ranked among the top ten most respected organizations in Ghana (a first for an educational institution). The survey was conducted by PwC and the Business and Financial Times.
