Scholarship details
IST scientists, from professors to doctors and students, hail from all corners of the world, represent more than 60 different nationalities, and are based on research and degrees obtained from the world’s best scientific institutes and universities.
They are dedicated to bringing the best minds in the world to IST Austria for cutting-edge basic scientific research. The Institute opened in 2009 and will grow to nearly 90 research groups by 2026. This exciting momentum is fueled by every scientist added to the team, including all doctors.
In all fields of research, financing is a very important issue. IST Austria depends on various sources of funding to support all its researchers. The Grant Office is there to support IST scientists who wish to apply for external funding.
The application session for 2020 has already passed, and the next session will open in the fall of 2020. The application deadline is January 8, 2021 (23:59 CET) for the PhD. Entry in September 2021.

Who can participate?:
Students with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, neuroscience, mathematics, computer science, physics, and related areas are encouraged to apply.
Grant amount:
IST Austria Full Scholarships cover internationally competitive wages, full health benefits and subsidized housing on campus for the first year.
Conditions to be met by participants:
The selection committee uses a collection of indicators to assess the applicant’s readiness, motivation and potential. The following will be considered: Scientific promise:
- Undergraduate performance: overall with a special focus on specific relevant field courses
- Reference letters provided by high-level professors and scientists: an industry letter is acceptable, but academic background letters take precedence; Referees are asked to address analytical skills, technical competence, the ability to work independently and motivation / commitment.
All documents must be submitted in English and copies of university transcripts also in their original language.
