ABOUT THE MAIZE TRUST
The Maize Trust, established in 1998, was formed after the closure of the Maize Board, with the more important aim of promoting the South African maize industry.
The Trust provides financial support to the maize industry to organizations and institutions running market and production-related research programs.
The Trust also provides for the assimilation of funds and the circulation of market information, as well as to increase market access for the benefit of the corn industry.

Level/field of study
The Maize Trust will award scholarships within fields related to the agricultural sector and the South African maize industry. Scholarships will be awarded specifically within the following fields of study (Master’s and Ph.D. studies only):
- agricultural economics
- agricultural meteorology
- Agricultural engineering
- Agronomy
- plant improvement
- plant physiology
- plant biochemistry
- plant pathology
- plant entomology
- plant nematology
- grass science
- Food Sciences (relevant to the crop industry)
- cattle science
- Weed Science
- Soil Science
- soil microbiology
- Molecular biology
- Biometrics
Host nationality

The Maize Trust Scholarship is open to all South African students to study at any of the country’s universities.
Scholarship Benefits
The scholarships will be awarded worth R78 334 per year for Masters students (for 2 years) and R94 817 per year for both Ph.D. students (for 3 years).
Scholarship funds must be used to offset the price of tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, living expenses, and other study materials.
After students have graduated, they are required to work within the South African maize industry, for a period of time corresponding to the scholarship received.
MAIZE TRUST BURSARY APPLICATION ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the following minimum entry standards before applying (please note that if you do not meet each of the requirements, your application will not be considered):
- South African citizen
- Completed matrix
- Study full-time in one of the mentioned fields of study (MSc or Ph.D. only)
- Studying at a recognized university in South Africa
- Attempt to complete a thesis on a topic that has been approved by the Maize Trust
- Willing to work within the South African maize industry after completing his studies.
- Have read and accepted all the terms of the Maize Trust Scholarship Program Agreement (Pdf).
