The Music Centre Award: A Rewarding Scheme for UEA Musicians

Are you a UEA student who loves music and wants to improve your skills and performance? Do you want to be part of the vibrant and diverse musical scene at UEA? Do you need some financial support to pursue your musical goals and activities? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might be interested in applying for the Music Centre Award.

The Music Centre Award is a scheme that UEA Music Centre offers every year to current students who show exceptional musical achievement and commitment. The award is for musicians of any instrument or voice and any style or tradition, including different national traditions. It is intended to encourage recipients to develop their musical and leadership skills and contribute significantly to music at UEA.

The award is worth £800 per year, which can be used to cover any costs related to your musical development and involvement, such as lessons, equipment, books, travel, or other expenses. The award also comes with other benefits, such as access to the UEA Music Centre facilities, priority booking for practice rooms, free membership of the UEA Choir and/or Symphony Orchestra, and opportunities to perform in concerts and events.

The Music Centre Award is open to all UEA students, regardless of their course or level of study. No qualifications need to have been taken, but a high standard of performance is expected, which can be demonstrated at audition. For those used to the graded exam system, a performing standard of Grade 8 and above is a benchmark. However, musicians who perform in a style or tradition without a formal method of assessment are also welcome to apply.

The application process has three main parts:

• You will need to submit an online application form by 6pm on Wednesday 8 May 2024. You will need to provide details about your current and previous musical activities, as well as your plans and aspirations for the future.

• You will need to make a video of yourself making music, upload it (unlisted) to YouTube and email the link by 6pm on Wednesday 8 May 2024. The video should include three contrasting items of a maximum total length of ten minutes. Two of these should be pieces that show you at your best, while the third should be a short unaccompanied study or folksong. Composers should submit performances of their works if possible, accompanied by scores.

• You will need to attend an audition at UEA on Saturday 18 May 2024. The audition will consist of performing two pieces of your choice, answering some questions about your musical background and interests, and sight-reading a short piece.

The applications will be assessed by an independent panel of experts from the music sector, who will select the most deserving and motivated candidates. The successful applicants will be notified by email by 31 August 2024.

The Music Centre Award is a rewarding opportunity for musicians who want to enhance their musical experience at UEA and benefit from its rich and diverse musical culture. The award will not only help you cover the costs of your musical activities, but also inspire you to achieve your musical potential and make a positive impact on the university community.

If you are interested in applying for the Music Centre Award, you can find more information on the UEA website. Don’t miss this chance to embark on an exciting journey of learning and discovery with the Music Centre Award. Apply now and get ready to experience music like never before!
