Scholarship Provider
The NL Scholarship is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and administered by Nuffic, the Dutch organization for internationalization in education. Nuffic is responsible for selecting the participating institutions, allocating the scholarships, and monitoring the implementation and quality of the program. Nuffic also provides guidance and support to the scholarship recipients and the host institutions.
Eligible Applicants
The NL Scholarship is open to non-EEA students who meet the following criteria:
- They have a non-EEA nationality and is not eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans.
- They have never studied or worked in the Netherlands before.
- They have applied for admission to a full-time bachelor’s or master’s program at one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions.
- They meet the specific academic and language requirements of the chosen program and institution.
- They demonstrate outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, leadership potential, and social engagement.

Scholarship Worth
The NL Scholarship covers the difference between institutional and statutory tuition fees, which can vary depending on the program and institution. The institutional tuition fee is the fee that the institution charges to non-EEA students, while the statutory tuition fee is the fee that the institution charges to EEA students. The difference can range from €3,000 to €25,000 per year. The scholarship does not cover other costs, such as living expenses, travel expenses, visa fees, health insurance, or books and materials. The scholarship recipients must cover these costs or seek other funding sources.
Level and Field of Study
The NL Scholarship is available for full-time bachelor’s or master’s programs at a participating Dutch higher education institution. The programs can be in any field of study if accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organization (NVAO) or another recognized accreditation body. The programs can be taught in English or Dutch, depending on the institution and the program. The duration of the programs can vary from one to four years, depending on the level and the field of study.
How to Apply
The application process for the NL Scholarship consists of two steps:
- Step 1: Apply for admission to a full-time bachelor’s or master’s program at one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions. You should follow the admission procedures and deadlines of the chosen institution and program. You should also indicate in your application that you wish to apply for the NL Scholarship and submit any additional documents or information the institution may require.
- Step 2: If the institution nominates you for the NL Scholarship, you will receive an invitation from Nuffic to complete an online application form and upload the required documents. The documents include a copy of your passport, a copy of your admission letter, a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, and two reference letters. You should complete and submit the online application form and the documents before the deadline specified by Nuffic.
Countries that can Apply
The NL Scholarship is open to non-EEA students with a non-EEA nationality and is not eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans. This means that students from the following countries are not eligible for the NL Scholarship: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Eligibility Criteria
