The South African Reserve Bank (the Bank) maintains a large art collection that comprises works in a variety of media from the early twentieth century to the present. The SARB awards an annual art scholarship to a final-year Fine Art student at a university or university of technology in South Africa’s Gauteng Province as part of its commitment to supporting and growing a new generation of South African artists. The art scholarship is offered to students who will be starting their final year of an undergraduate Fine Art degree in 2022. Students enrolled at a university or university of technology in the Gauteng province are eligible for the award. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is the country’s monetary authority. The primary responsibility of the Bank is to protect the value of the currency while also promoting growth and stability in the South African economy. Furthermore, the Bank issues and destroys currencies (both banknotes and coins); manages the nation’s payment system, acts as the government’s banker, manages the country’s foreign reserves and official gold, supervises and regulates financial institutions, and acts as the lender for offering liquidity assistance, as well as administering the exchange rate system.

About the Scholarship:

The South African Reserve Bank (the Bank) is the country’s central bank. The Bank’s principal goal is to attain and maintain price stability in order to promote balanced and sustainable economic growth. It, along with other institutions, plays a critical role in ensuring financial stability.

In order to fulfill its mandate and purpose, the Bank performs the following key functions: formulating and implementing monetary policy; promoting financial stability; regulating and supervising the banking and insurance industries through the Prudential Authority; issuing banknotes and coins; managing the country’s official gold and foreign-exchange (FX) reserves; conducting data analysis and research; ensuring the effective operation of the National Payment System; and advisng the government.
