SBW Berlin was founded in 1994 by Dr. Hans-Georg Wicke, a German entrepreneur and philanthropist, who wanted to contribute to the international advancement and dissemination of education and knowledge. Since then, SBW Berlin has supported more than 500 students from over 80 countries, and has initiated various projects in the fields of education, culture, health, and environment.
Eligible Applicants
The SBW Berlin Scholarship is open to young people from abroad who have a financially disadvantaged family background and use the skills they acquire during their studies in Germany to boost long-term non-profit projects, preferably in their home countries. The applicants should be between 18 and 30 years old, and should have excellent academic qualifications, personal aptitudes, and social needs. The SBW Berlin Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship that covers the following expenses:
- A room in a shared student flat in Berlin
- Cost-of-living allowance
- Tuition fees
- Possibly also a travel allowance for your journey to Berlin before the start of your studies and for the journey home after you have completed your studies
Level and Field of Study
The SBW Berlin Scholarship is available for Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in any scientific or artistic discipline, or vocational training in Berlin or Potsdam. In general, all state-recognized universities and colleges in Berlin and Potsdam are eligible, except for private universities that charge high tuition fees. The applicants should choose a study program that matches their interests, abilities, and career aspirations, and that is relevant for their project idea.
How to Apply
The SBW Berlin Scholarship has two application periods per year: May 15 to June 30 and November 15 to December 31. The applicants should fill out an online application form, and upload the following documents:
- A letter of motivation
- A curriculum vitae
- A project outline
- A copy of the school-leaving certificate or the university entrance qualification
- A copy of the university enrollment certificate or the confirmation of admission
- A proof of the financial situation of the applicant and their family
