The John Agricultural College of Tarleton was founded in 1899 through a donation from settler John Tarleton. It became part of the Texas A&M University System in 1917.
In 1949, it was renamed Tarleton State College. It transitioned to offering four-year degrees in 1959 and achieved university status in 1973. By 2003, it had introduced doctoral programs.
Tarleton serves as the educational and cultural hub of the Cross Timbers region. With a population of 17,000, it’s listed in Norman Crampton’s publication “100 Best Small Towns in America.”
In 2007, a new 70,000-square-foot sports recreation center opened, featuring amenities like weight rooms, a track, and a gym. The two-story facility encompasses four racquetball courts, cardio equipment, multipurpose rooms, classrooms, and offices.
This facility also houses a climbing wall and an “outdoor chase” area, where students can access outdoor equipment like kayaks, tents, and camping gear.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently approved an Associate of Applied Science degree and Advanced Technician Certificates for Medical Laboratory Technology and Histotechnology at Tarleton.
Tarleton State University Scholarships
Tarleton accepts scholarship applications all year round. Yet, it’s important for students to meet the priority deadline annually to be considered for all the scholarships they’re eligible for.

#1. The Sade Lowery Memorial Scholarship
The Sade Lowery Memorial Scholarship will be offered to full-time students majoring in music education. Recipients must also demonstrate financial need and be a member in good standing at an instrumental assembly.

#2. A.B. Medlen Scholarship
The AB Medlen Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time deserving student in good standing with the university, majoring in biology, and who has completed 30 college credit hours.

#3. Ag. and consumer science student scholarships
The AG. and a Consumer Science Scholarship will be awarded to teachers in Agriculture and Consumer Sciences with a 2.6 GPA.

#4. Agricultural Development and Services Alumni Scholarship
The Agricultural Services and Development Alumni Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student primarily in the area of agricultural services and development, seeking early certification through traditional courses, demonstrating strong leadership ability, and an expressed interest in education.
Partiality will be awarded to an active Tarleton Collegiate FFA chapter member. The committee will take into consideration financial need and academic performance.

#4. Agricultural Career Development Scholarship
The Agriculture Career Development Scholarship was founded in 2004 to identify outstanding high school students from across the state participating in the annual judging competitions.

#5. Agriculture Contest Scholarships
The Agriculture Competition Scholarship will be awarded to top-tier high school seniors participating in statewide competitions, including Dairy Foods, Pasture and Range, Forage Estimation, and Land Assessment.

#6. Alex Price and Ruby Fambro Scholarship
The Alex Price & Ruby Fambro Scholarship will be awarded to a student primarily in agriculture and participating in the rodeo.
For the agriculture section, the recipient must be primarily in an agriculture area, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and maintain their major in agriculture.
For the rodeo section, the recipient must successfully participate as a member of the Tarleton Rodeo Association and retain at least a 2.50 GPA.

#7. Allen Livestock Management Scholarship
The Allen Cattle Management Scholarship will be awarded to a Bosque County student majoring in animal production, livestock management, or any associated field at Tarleton State University who graduated from high school with a high academic standard.

#8. Alpha Gamma Delta Epsilon Upsilon Alumnae Endowed Scholarship
Alpha Gamma Delta Epsilon Upsilon Umeilon Scholarship will be awarded to Alpha Gamma Delta members who are full-time students in good standing.
Prize: 400 USD
Scope: Leadership Scholarships
Deadline: January annually.
#9. Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Scholarships
The Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student in good standing at the university who is an active member of the Xi Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega.
The beneficiary must demonstrate financial need and exemplify the three cardinal principles (3) of Alpha Phi Omega: friendship, leadership, and service.

#10. American Association of University Women Rosellen Davis Scholarships
The Rosellen Davis American Association of University Women Scholarship will be awarded to a high school student from Erath County, Texas, who plans to attend Tarleton State University as a full-time student.

#eleven. Ann Bulecza Petronis Nursing Scholarship
The Ann Bulecza Petronis Nursing Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving full-time student pursuing a degree in nursing who is admitted to the Nursing Program and maintains a 2.75 or higher GPA.
Scope: College of Science and Technology

#12. Annie Myrah Schuman Nursing Scholarship
The Annie Myrah Schuman Nursing Scholarship will be awarded to a Tarleton State University Nursing Program student regardless of age, gender, national origin, or race.
The recipient must have a reasonable desire to serve their fellow man and must also have successfully completed the first semester of the nursing curriculum and demonstrate financial need.
Prize: 1,500 USD
