The University of Edinburgh offers a scholarship for outstanding students in Latin America, Africa, Central and South Asia, Pacific Island, and Caribbean Isaland to apply for the David and Molly Pyott Foundation Scholarship in Ophthalmology. The scholarship is a twelve online learning masters scholarship for the academic year of 2023-2024.
Clinical Ophthalmology Online Learning at the University of Edinburgh
ChM has been developed to support advanced ophthalmology trainees in the UK and international ophthalmology registrants/residents. This is achieved through a curriculum recognizing eye care interests in test preparation and hospital practice. This program will be taught in an online program. You will be supported by discussions with e-tutors – all top doctors in their fields. You can also access great learning resources, including subscriptions to major online books and journals.
The admitted online students will have access to Edinburgh’s resources and become part of the supportive online communities which bring together tutors and students worldwide. The online structure of the program wil be fully interactive, high-quality, and award-winning lectures that will also enable students to communicate with their highly qualified professors in the comfort of their homes. All students will be expected to lead the e-journals and e-seminars.
All academic courses (core and special courses) will allow every student to explore research and teaching methods. Students will also develop skills to analyze published evidence and explore interactive and written clinical communication skills. Knowledge and understanding are assessed through a formal multiple-choice question (MCQ) exam designed to reflect students’ upcoming exams. The students will also participate in academic discussion forums, lead and moderate debates, and create a reflective e-portfolio.

Scholarship Eligibility
Before proceeding with the application, the students must meet the eligibility criteria for the scholarship.
- Scholarships are awarded to students who have been accepted for admission to the Online Master of Surgery (ChM) in Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of Edinburgh, one of the Edinburgh online Master of Surgery programs. Applicants must have received an offer of a place at the University of Edinburgh and have expressly accepted or intend to accept the offer. Applicants must be experienced in training/resident/registrar in ophthalmology. Applications from young ophthalmologists may also be considered.
- International qualified countries are required to have good communication skills in oral and written English. The applicants must demonstrate their level of English regardless of their nationality.

English Language Requirements
The university will be accepting the following English Language test score results:
- IELTS test score of 6.5 or with at least 6.0 in each component
- TOEFL-iBT total of 92
- C1 Advance CAE total of 176
- PTE total score of 62
Selection Criteria
Selection is based will be based on academic merit and a personal statement describing your current contribution to your country’s local and national ophthalmology development plan and how you will use the scholarship to further contribute to the development of ophthalmic services in your country.
Candidates who are successfully employed in their country’s eye services after completing their studies; use their new skills to further improve and develop the Service; and to promote clinical and academic links between the country’s medical universities, eye teaching hospitals, and research institutes, and the University of Edinburgh.
Scholarship Awards
Twelve successful students will be awarded the David and Molly Pyott Foundation Scholarship by the University of Edinburgh. The successful students will be awarded full tuition fee coverage for the entire program and funds towards the student’s laptop and internet services fees.
