Express Entry: Study and work in Canada
Canada’s Express Entry (EE) introduced in 2015 has become the main driver of skilled worker immigration to Canada. It is an online immigration application system through which individuals and families from all over the world can immigrate to Canada in just a few months. It allows people to submit a profile and be considered experienced professionals or skilled immigrants.
Canada Express Entry:
- If you complete a profile for Express Entry, your application will be ranked according to a points system.
- If you rank high, you will be invited to apply for permanent residence as a qualified immigrant.
- Once you have submitted your application, it will be processed within the next 6 months.
How the Visa Express Entry works
Express Entry is an online system used by the Government of Canada to administer applications for permanent residence by skilled workers.
Step 1 – Check if you are eligible
There are two ways to find out if you are eligible for a program that is part of Express Entry:
- Answer a few questions to see if you meet the minimum requirements
- Read the detailed requirements for each program
Step 2 – Prepare your documents
You need documents, such as language test results, to show that you are eligible for Express Entry.

Step 3 – Submit your profile
Your Express Entry profile is where you provide information about yourself.
If you are eligible, you will be accepted into a candidate pool.
You will be ranked in the Express Entry pool using a points-based system. Your score is based on the information in your profile.
Step 4: Receive an invitation and apply for permanent residence
They send invitations to apply to the candidates with the highest scores in the pool. If you are invited, you will have 60 days to submit your application for permanent residence.
They will process the most complete applications that have all supporting documents in 6 months or less.

What immigration programs does Canada Express Entry cover?
You must use Express Entry to apply for:
- The Skilled Worker Program
- The Skilled Trades Program
- The Canadian Experience Class
Some candidates for the Ontario Provincial Nominee Program are also selected through Express Entry.
Do I qualify for Express Entry?
You qualify for Express Entry if you meet the eligibility criteria for the Skilled Worker program, the Skilled Trades Program, or the Canadian Experience Class.
How are Express Entry profile points determined?
Your Express Entry profile will earn points based on:
- education level
- Skills in English and/or French (the 2 official languages of Canada)
- Work experience and skills
- Age
- If you have a job offer in Canada
- Your spouse’s education, language skills, and work experience.
Additional points are also awarded if you have completed a college or university program in Canada or have a provincial nomination.
How does Express Entry choose people?
- Once you submit your profile, you will be entered into a pool of everyone who has currently applied for Express Entry.
- You will then be ranked against other people in the group. Your ranking is based on the number of points you have.
- If you are at the top of the ranking, your profile will be selected from the list of applications. You will then receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence as a qualified immigrant.
