About the University

KNUST, which was founded in 1952, has a long and illustrious history in its development into a world-class university. KNUST was founded by Kwame Nkrumah, the African Personality of the Century and a pioneer of African freedom. KNUST believes in achieving success via hard work and dedication. We are still working on initiatives to not only maintain our position as Ghana’s No. 1 but also to strengthen our international ranking. Since January 2005, KNUST has transitioned from its prior centralized administrative system to the Collegiate system, which is highly decentralized. The numerous faculties have been consolidated into six colleges under this structure. The University has been run on a faculty-based basis since its founding.

As a result, new Faculties and Institutes were established to fulfill the ever-increasing academic pursuits of students. Duplication of efforts and lengthy administrative processes were commonplace as a result of the resulting collection of Faculties, which inhibited efficient administrative and academic operations. It became clear that dealing with these difficulties and harmonizing the operation of existing institutions was necessary. This was especially true given the ever-increasing student population. The Collegiate System was established on November 29, 2004, in accordance with the Vice-objective Chancellors of making KNUST the model for technological education in Africa and his dedication to academic excellence.
