The Methodology and Criteria for the Ranking and Review
To rank and review the top universities in the world for international students, we used a combination of quantitative and qualitative data from various sources. We considered the following criteria and indicators:
- The international student ratio which measures the proportion of international students among the total student population of the university. This indicator reflects the diversity and inclusiveness of the university, as well as the attractiveness and accessibility of the university for international students. A higher international student ratio indicates a more internationalized and welcoming university environment.
- The international faculty ratio, which measures the proportion of international faculty members among the total faculty staff of the university. This indicator reflects the academic quality and reputation of the university, as well as the international exposure and networking opportunities for students and researchers. A higher international faculty ratio indicates a more global and collaborative university culture.
- The international reputation which measures the perception and recognition of the university among academics and employers worldwide. This indicator reflects the prestige and influence of the university and the graduates’ employability and career prospects. A higher international reputation indicates a more respected and sought-after university brand.
- The international collaboration which measures the extent and impact of the university’s research partnerships and publications with other institutions and countries. This indicator reflects the innovation and excellence of the university, as well as the contribution and relevance of the university to the global society and challenges. A higher international collaboration indicates a more productive and influential university output.
- The international student satisfaction which measures the feedback and ratings of the current and former international students of the university. This indicator reflects the experience and outcomes of the international students and the quality and availability of the student support and services. A higher international student satisfaction indicates a more positive and fulfilling university journey.
We used the data and rankings from the QS World University Rankings 2024, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024, and the US News Best Global Universities Rankings 2023-2024 to obtain the values and scores for the first four criteria. We used the information and feedback from the universities’ official websites and social media platforms and their international student associations to obtain qualitative and anecdotal evidence for the last criterion. We also used these sources to supplement and verify the data and rankings from the other sources.
We assigned different weights to each criterion, depending on the importance and relevance of the criterion for international students. We used the following weights:
- International student ratio: 25%
- International faculty ratio: 20%
- International reputation: 25%
- International collaboration: 15%
- International student satisfaction: 15%
We calculated the weighted average score for each university based on the values and scores for each criterion. We then ranked the universities according to their weighted average scores, from highest to lowest. We also reviewed the strengths and weaknesses of each university based on the qualitative and quantitative data from the sources.
